كَيْفَ كَانَتْ صَلَاتُكُمْ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ فَقَالَ: كَانَ يُصَلِّي بِنَا الْهَجِيرَ الَّتِي تُسَمُّونَهَا أَنْتُمُ الظُّهْرَ حِينَ تَدْحَضُ الشَّمْسُ، وَيُصَلِّي بِنَا الْعَصْرَ وَالشَّمْسُ حَيَّةٌ - وَنَسِيتُ مَا قَالَ فِي الْمَغْرِبِ - وَكَانَ يُصَلِّي بِنَا الْعِشَاءَ لَا يُبَالِي أَنْ يُؤَخِّرَهَا إِلَى ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ، وَكَانَ لَا يُحِبُّ النَّوْمَ قَبْلَهَا وَلَا الْحَدِيثَ بَعْدَهَا، وَكَانَ يُصَلِّي بِنَا الْفَجْرَ فَيَنْصَرِفُ أَحَدُنَا وَهُوَ يَعْرِفُ جَلِيسَهُ، وَكَانَ يَقْرَأُ فِيهَا مِنَ السِّتِّينَ إِلَى الْمِائَةِ
✧ How was your prayer with the Messenger of God ﷺ? He said: He used to lead us in the mid-day prayer, which you call al-zuhr, when the sun declined. And he used to lead us in al-asr while the sun was still alive — and I forgot what he said about al-maghrib — and he used to lead us in al-isha not caring to delay it to a third of the night, and he disliked sleeping before it and talking after it. And he used to lead us in al-fajr and one of us would leave while he could recognize his companion. And he used to recite in it from sixty to one hundred [verses].

خَرَجْنَا فِي غَزَاةٍ لَنَا فَنَزَلْنَا مَنْزِلًا، فَاشْتَرَى رَجُلٌ عَبْدًا بِفَرَسٍ، فَبَقِينَا بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِنَا وَلَيْلَتِنَا، فَلَمَّا كَانَ عِنْدَ الرَّحِيلِ قَامَ الرَّجُلُ إِلَى فَرَسِهِ لِيُسْرِجَهُ، فَأَخَذَهُ الرَّجُلُ بِالْبَيْعِ، فَاخْتَصَمَا إِلَى أَبِي بَرْزَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ، فَقَالَ: أَتَرْضَيَانِ أَنْ أَقْضِيَ بَيْنَكُمَا بِقَضَاءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَضَى أَنَّهُ الْبَيِّعَانِ بِالْخِيَارِ مَا لَمْ يَتَفَرَّقَا
✧ We went out on an expedition of ours and encamped at a place. A man bought a slave for a horse, and we remained the rest of our day and night. When it was time to depart, the man went to his horse to saddle it, but the other man seized him over the sale. They brought their dispute to Abu Barzah al-Aslami, and he said: Would you both accept that I judge between you with the judgment of the Messenger of God ﷺ? The Messenger of God ﷺ ruled that the two parties to a sale have the option as long as they have not separated.

كُنْتُ أَتَمَنَّى أَنْ أَلْقَى رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْخَوَارِجِ، فَلَقِيتُ أَبَا بَرْزَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيَّ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ فِي نَاسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُحَدِّثُ فِي الْخَوَارِجِ ؟ قَالَ أَبُو بَرْزَةَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بِأُذُنِي وَرَأَيْتُهُ بِعَيْنِي، أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِمَالٍ فَقَسَمَهُ، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ أَسْوَدُ مَطْمُومُ الشَّعَرِ عَلَيْهِ ثَوْبَانِ أَبْيَضَانِ، فَأَعْطَى مَنْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَمَنْ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ وَلَمْ يُعْطِهِ شَيْئًا، فَجَاءَ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ فَقَالَ: وَاللهِ يَا مُحَمَّدُ مَا عَدَلْتَ ! فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: وَاللهِ لَا تَجِدُونَ أَحَدًا بَعْدِي أَعْدَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنِّي، قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " يَخْرُجُ قَوْمٌ فِي آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ كَأَنَّ هَذَا مِنْهُمْ، يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ، سِيمَاهُمُ التَّحْلِيقُ، يَخْرُجُونَ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ آخِرُهُمْ مَعَ الْمَسِيحِ، فَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ فَاقْتُلُوهُمْ، هُمْ شَرُّ الْخَلْقِ وَالْخَلِيقَةِ
✧ I used to wish to meet a man from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ to ask him about the Khawarij. I met Abu Barzah al-Aslami on a day of Eid among people from his companions, and I said to him: Have you heard the Messenger of God ﷺ speak about the Khawarij? Abu Barzah said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ with my ears and saw him with my eyes. Some wealth was brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ and he divided it. A black man with trimmed hair, wearing two white garments, came and he gave to those on his right and those on his left but gave him nothing. He came from behind him and said: By God, O Muhammad, you have not been just! The Messenger of God ﷺ said: By God, you will not find anyone after me more just to you than me. He said it three times. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'A people will emerge in the last days as if this man is from them. They recite the Quran but it does not go beyond their collarbones. They pass through Islam as an arrow passes through the game. Their mark is shaving. They will emerge until the last of them comes out with the Messiah. So when you meet them, kill them. They are the worst of creation and creatures.'

كَانَ فِي مَغْزًى لَهُ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنَ الْقِتَالِ قَالَ: " هَلْ تَفْقِدُونَ مِنْ أَحَدٍ ؟ "، قَالُوا: نَفْقِدُ وَاللهِ فُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " انْظُرُوا هَلْ تَفْقِدُونَ مِنْ أَحَدٍ ؟ "، قَالُوا: نَفْقِدُ فُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا. قَالَ: لَكِنِّي أَفْقِدُ جُلَيْبِيبًا، فَاطْلُبُوهُ، فَوَجَدُوهُ عِنْدَ سَبْعَةٍ قَدْ قَتَلَهُمْ ثُمَّ قَتَلُوهُ، فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأُخْبِرَ، فَانْتَهَى إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ: " قَتَلَ سَبْعَةً ثُمَّ قَتَلُوهُ ! هَذَا مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْهُ، قَتَلَ سَبْعَةً وَقَتَلُوهُ ! هَذَا مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْهُ "، قَالَهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ بِذِرَاعَيْهِ هَكَذَا - فَبَسَطَهُمَا، فَوُضِعَ عَلَى ذِرَاعَيِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ حَتَّى حُفِرَ لَهُ، فَمَا كَانَ لَهُ سَرِيرٌ إِلَّا ذِرَاعَيِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ حَتَّى دُفِنَ. قَالَ: وَمَا ذَكَرَ غُسْلًا
✧ He was on an expedition of his, and when he finished fighting, he said: 'Do you miss anyone?' They said: By God, we miss so-and-so and so-and-so and so-and-so. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Look, do you miss anyone?' They said: We miss so-and-so and so-and-so. He said: But I miss Julaybib, so search for him. They found him beside seven [men] whom he had killed, and then they killed him. The Prophet ﷺ was informed and he came to him and said: 'He killed seven, then they killed him! This one is from me and I am from him. He killed seven, then they killed him! This one is from me and I am from him.' He said it twice or three times. Then he gestured with his arms like this — and spread them out — and he was placed on the arms of the Prophet ﷺ until a grave was dug for him. He had no bier except the arms of the Prophet ﷺ until he was buried. He (the narrator) said: He did not mention washing.

كُنْتُ قَاعِدًا عَلَى جُرُفٍ بِالْأَهْوَازِ فَإِذَا شَيْخٌ يُصَلِّي قَدْ عَمَدَ إِلَى عِنَانِ دَابَّتِهِ فَجَعَلَهُ فِي يَدِهِ، فَنَكَصَتِ الدَّابَّةُ فَنَكَصَ مَعَهَا، وَمَعَنَا رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْخَوَارِجِ فَجَعَلَ يَسُبُّهُ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ قَالَ: قَدْ سَمِعْتُ كَلَامَكُمْ، غَزَوْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوَةَ كَذَا وَغَزْوَةَ كَذَا، وَشَهِدْتُ أَمْرَهُ وَتَيْسِيرَهُ "، وَأَنْ أُمْسِكَ دَابَّتِي أَهْوَنُ عَلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَدَعَهَا فَتَأْتِيَ مَأْلَفَهَا فَيَشُقَّ عَلَيَّ
✧ I was sitting on a riverbank in al-Ahwaz, and there was an old man praying who had taken hold of his mount's rein and placed it in his hand. The mount backed up, so he backed up with it. With us was a man from the Khawarij who began to insult him. When he finished his prayer, he said: I have heard your words. I fought with the Messenger of God ﷺ in such-and-such an expedition and such-and-such an expedition, and I witnessed his command and his facilitation. Holding my mount is easier for me than leaving it to go to its accustomed place, which would be hard for me.
