16. ✧ The letter Ta'

    إِذَا اشْتَكَى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَضَعْ يَدَهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ الْوَجَعِ، ثُمَّ لْيَقُلْ: بِاسْمِ اللهِ وَبِاللهِ أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ وَجَعِي هَذَا

    ✧ When one of you complains of pain, let him place his hand on that pain, then say: 'In the name of Allah and by Allah; I seek refuge in the might of Allah and His power from the evil of this pain of mine.'

    يَقْطَعُ الصَّلَاةَ الْكَلْبُ الْأَسْوَدُ وَالْحِمَارُ، وَالْمَرْأَةُ، فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي ذَرٍّ: فَمَا شَأْنُ الْكَلْبِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنْ بَيْنِ الْكِلَابِ ؟ فَقَالَ: يَا ابْنَ أَخِي، سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَمَا سَأَلْتَنِي فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ، إِنَّ الْكَلْبَ الْأَسْوَدَ شَيْطَانٌ

    ✧ Prayer is interrupted by a black dog, a donkey, and a woman. I said to Abu Dharr: 'What is the matter with the black dog as opposed to other dogs?' He said: 'O son of my brother, I asked the Prophet ﷺ just as you asked me, and he said: "O Abu Dharr, the black dog is a devil."'

    مَنْ صَلَّى الضُّحَى اثْنَتَيْ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً بَنَى اللهُ لَهُ بِهَا قَصْرًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ

    ✧ Whoever prays twelve rak'ahs of Duha, Allah will build for him thereby a palace of gold in Paradise.

    أَشَدُّ النَّاسِ عَذَابًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَالِمٌ لَمْ يَنْفَعْهُ عِلْمُهُ

    ✧ The most severely punished of people on the Day of Resurrection will be a scholar whose knowledge did not benefit him.

    أَنَّ رَجُلًا كَانَ يَخْتَلِفُ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ ؓ فِي حَاجَةٍ لَهُ، فَكَانَ عُثْمَانُ لَا يَلْتَفِتُ إِلَيْهِ، وَلَا يَنْظُرُ فِي حَاجَتِهِ، فَلَقِيَ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ حُنَيْفٍ، فَشَكَا ذَلِكَ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ: ائْتِ الْمِيضَأَةَ فَتَوَضَّأْ، ثُمَّ ائْتِ الْمَسْجِدَ فَصَلِّ فِيهِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ قُلِ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ وَأَتَوَجَّهُ إِلَيْكَ بِنَبِيِّنَا مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ نَبِيِّ الرَّحْمَةِ، يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنِّي أَتَوَجَّهُ بِكَ إِلَى رَبِّكَ [ رَبِّي ] جَلَّ وَعَزَّ فَيَقْضِي لِي حَاجَتِي، وَتَذْكُرُ حَاجَتَكَ، وَرُحْ إِلَيَّ حَتَّى أَرُوحَ مَعَكَ، فَانْطَلَقَ الرَّجُلُ، فَصَنَعَ مَا قَالَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ، ثُمَّ أَتَى بَابَ عُثْمَانَ، فَجَاءَ الْبَوَّابُ حَتَّى أَخَذَ بِيَدِهِ، فَأَدْخَلَهُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ، فَأَجْلَسَهُ مَعَهُ عَلَى الطِّنْفِسَةِ، وَقَالَ: حَاجَتُكَ ؟ فَذَكَرَ حَاجَتَهُ، فَقَضَاهَا لَهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ: مَا ذَكَرْتُ حَاجَتَكَ حَتَّى كَانَتْ هَذِهِ السَّاعَةُ، وَقَالَ: مَا كَانَتْ لَكَ مِنْ حَاجَةٍ، فَأْتِنَا، ثُمَّ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ خَرَجَ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ، فَلَقِيَ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ حُنَيْفٍ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: جَزَاكَ اللهُ خَيْرًا، مَا كَانَ يَنْظُرُ فِي حَاجَتِي، وَلَا يَلْتَفِتُ إِلَيَّ حَتَّى كَلَّمْتَهُ فِيَّ، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ: وَاللهِ مَا كَلَّمْتُهُ وَلَكِنْ شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَتَاهُ ضَرِيرٌ، فَشَكَا عَلَيْهِ ذَهَابَ بَصَرِهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: أَفَتَصْبِرُ ؟ "، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لِي قَائِدٌ، وَقَدْ شَقَّ عَلَيَّ، فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: ائْتِ الْمِيضَأَةَ، فَتَوَضَّأْ، ثُمَّ صَلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ ادْعُ بِهَذِهِ الدَّعَوَاتِ. قَالَ عُثْمَانُ: فَوَاللهِ مَا تَفَرَّقْنَا وَطَالَ بِنَا الْحَدِيثُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا الرَّجُلُ كَأَنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ بِهِ ضَرَرٌ قَطُّ

    ✧ A man used to go to 'Uthman b. 'Affan ؓ concerning a need of his, but 'Uthman would not turn to him nor look into his need. So he met 'Uthman b. Hunayf and complained about that to him. 'Uthman b. Hunayf said to him: 'Go to the place of ablution and perform wudu', then go to the mosque and pray two rak'ahs in it, then say: "O Allah, I ask You and turn to You by our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the Prophet of mercy. O Muhammad, I turn by you to your Lord [my Lord], Mighty and Majestic, that He may fulfill my need." And mention your need, then come to me so that I may go with you.' So the man went and did what 'Uthman told him. Then he came to the door of 'Uthman, and the doorkeeper came and took him by the hand and brought him into 'Uthman b. 'Affan, who seated him with him on the cushion and said: 'Your need?' He mentioned his need, and he fulfilled it for him. Then he said to him: 'I did not remember your need until this very hour,' and he said: 'Whatever need you have, come to us.' Then the man left him and met 'Uthman b. Hunayf and said to him: 'May Allah reward you well. He had not been looking into my need nor turning to me until you spoke to him about me.' 'Uthman b. Hunayf said: 'By Allah, I did not speak to him. But I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a blind man came to him and complained to him about the loss of his sight. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Will you not be patient?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have no guide, and it has become hard for me." The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Go to the place of ablution, perform wudu', then pray two rak'ahs, then supplicate with these words." 'Uthman said: "By Allah, we had not parted and the conversation had not gone on long before the man entered upon us as if he had never had any affliction at all."

    إِنَّ لِلْقُلُوبِ صَدَأً كَصَدَأِ الْحَدِيدِ وَجَلَاؤُهَا الِاسْتِغْفَارُ

    ✧ Hearts have rust like the rust of iron, and their polish is seeking forgiveness.

    جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى الْحَسَنِ وَالْحُسَيْنِ ؓ، فَسَأَلَهُمَا، فَقَالَا: إِنَّ الْمَسْأَلَةَ لَا تَصْلُحُ إِلَّا لِثَلَاثَةٍ: لِحَاجَةٍ مُجْحِفَةٍ، أَوْ لِحَمَالَةٍ مُثْقِلَةٍ، أَوْ دَيْنٍ فَادِحٍ، فَأَعْطَيَاهُ، ثُمَّ أَتَى ابْنُ عُمَرَ، فَأَعْطَاهُ وَلَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ: أَتَيْتُ ابْنَيْ عَمِّكَ، فَسَأَلَانِي، وَلَمْ تَسْأَلْنِي، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: ابْنَا رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا كَانَا يُغَرَّانِ الْعِلْمَ غَرًّا

    ✧ A man came to al-Hasan and al-Husayn ؓ and asked them, and they said: 'Begging is only appropriate for three: a devastating need, a heavy guarantee, or a crushing debt.' So they gave him. Then he came to Ibn 'Umar, and he gave him without asking him. The man said to him: 'I came to your two cousins, and they asked me, but you did not ask me.' Ibn 'Umar said: 'The two sons of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were only being taught knowledge thoroughly.'
