✧ Khālid b. al-Walīd's expedition after the conquest to Banū Jadhīmah of Kinānah and ʿAlī's expedition to remedy Khālid's error [The Messenger's instruction to him and what happened on his part] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent out raiding parties in the areas around Makkah, calling to God, Mighty and Majestic, and he did not command them to fight. Among those he sent was Khālid b. al-Walīd, and he commanded him to travel in the lower part of Tihāmah as a caller, and he did not send him as a fighter. He fell upon Banū Jadhīmah and inflicted losses upon them. Ibn Hishām said: ʿAbbās b. Mirdās al-Sulamī said about that: If you have appointed Khālid over the people and advanced him, he has indeed gone forth with an army. God guided him, you are its commander; through him we strike down in truth whoever is most wrong. Ibn Hishām said: These two verses are in a poem of his concerning the affair of the day of Ḥunayn, which I shall mention, God willing, in its proper place. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥakīm b. Ḥakīm b. ʿAbbād b. Ḥunayf narrated to me, from Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent Khālid b. al-Walīd when he conquered Makkah as a caller, and he did not send him as a fighter. With him were tribes of the Arabs: Sulaym b. Manṣūr and Mudlij b. Murrah. They fell upon Banū Jadhīmah b. ʿĀmir b. ʿAbd Manāh b. Kinānah. When the people saw him, they took up arms. Khālid said: Put down your arms, for the people have submitted. Ibn Isḥāq said: One of our companions from the people of knowledge among Banū Jadhīmah narrated to me, saying: When Khālid ordered us to put down our arms, a man of ours called Jaḥdam said: Woe to you, O Banū Jadhīmah! This is Khālid. By God, after putting down arms there is nothing but captivity, and after captivity nothing but the striking of necks. By God, I will never put down my weapon. He said: Some men of his people took hold of him and said: O Jaḥdam, do you want to shed our blood? The people have submitted and laid down their arms, and war has ceased, and the people are safe. They did not leave him until they stripped his weapon from him, and the people laid down their arms at Khālid's word. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥakīm b. Ḥakīm narrated to me, from Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, who said: When they had laid down their arms, Khālid then ordered them to be bound, and they were tied up. Then he exposed them to the sword and killed those of them he killed. When the news reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, he raised his hands to the sky and said: O God, I declare my innocence to You of what Khālid b. al-Walīd has done.

✧ Ibn Hishām said: A certain learned man related to me, on the authority of Ibrāhīm b. Jaʿfar al-Maḥmūdī, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "I saw as though I had taken a morsel of ḥays and enjoyed its taste, but something of it stuck in my throat when I swallowed it, so ʿAlī put in his hand and removed it." Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ said: "O Messenger of God ﷺ, this is one of your expeditions which you send out, from which comes some of what you love, but in part of it there is an obstruction; so you send ʿAlī, and he makes it easy." Ibn Hishām said: And he related to me that a man from the people escaped and came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him of the news. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Did anyone object to him?" He said: "Yes, a white man of medium height objected to him, but Khālid rebuked him and he fell silent. And another man, tall and restless, objected and argued back, and their dispute became intense." ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: "The first, O Messenger of God ﷺ, is my son ʿAbdullāh, and the other is Sālim, the freedman of Abū Ḥudhayfah." Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥakīm b. Ḥakīm related to me, on the authority of Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, who said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ summoned ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, may God be pleased with him, and said: "O ʿAlī, go out to these people and look into their affair, and put the affair of the Age of Ignorance beneath your feet." So ʿAlī went out until he came to them, with him wealth which the Messenger of God ﷺ had sent. He paid them the blood-money for the slain and for what property of theirs had been taken, until he even paid them for the dog's drinking bowl. When nothing of blood or property remained but had been compensated, there remained with him a remainder of the wealth. ʿAlī, may God be pleased with him, said to them when he had finished with them: "Is there any remainder of blood or property of yours that has not been compensated?" They said: "No." He said: "Then I give you this remainder of this wealth as a precaution for the Messenger of God ﷺ, for what he knows and you do not know." And he did so. Then he returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him of the news. He said: "You have done right and done well." He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ stood up, facing the qiblah, standing with his hands raised, so that the whiteness under his shoulders could be seen, saying: "O God, I declare myself innocent before You of what Khālid b. al-Walīd has done," three times.

✧ [Khālid's excuse for fighting the people] Ibn Isḥāq said: Some of those who excuse Khālid said that he said: I did not fight until ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥudhāfah al-Sahmī ordered me to do so, and he said: The Messenger of God ﷺ has ordered you to fight them because of their refusal of Islam. Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿAmr al-Madanī said: When Khālid came to them, they said: We have become Sabaeans, we have become Sabaeans. [What occurred between Khālid and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and the Messenger's rebuke of Khālid] Ibn Isḥāq said: Jaḥdam had said to them when they laid down their weapons and saw what Khālid was doing to Banū Jadhīmah: O Banū Jadhīmah, the striking is lost; I had warned you of what you have fallen into. There occurred between Khālid and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, as I have been informed, some words about that. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf said to him: You have acted according to the affair of the Age of Ignorance in Islam. He said: I only sought vengeance for your father. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: You have lied; I killed the killer of my father, but you sought vengeance for your uncle al-Fākih b. al-Mughīrah, so that there was evil between them. That reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: Gently, O Khālid, leave my companions alone. For by God, if you had gold equal to Uhud and you spent it in the way of God, you would not attain the morning journey of a man from among my companions nor his evening journey.

✧ [What occurred between Quraysh and Banū Jadhīmah of preparation for war and then peace] Al-Fākih b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm, ʿAwf b. ʿAbd Manāf b. ʿAbd al-Ḥārith b. Zuhrah, and ʿAffān b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ b. Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams had gone out as merchants to Yemen. With ʿAffān was his son ʿUthmān, and with ʿAwf was his son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. When they returned, they carried the property of a man of Banū Jadhīmah b. ʿĀmir, who had died in Yemen, to his heirs. A man of them called Khālid b. Hishām claimed it and met them in the land of Banū Jadhīmah before they reached the family of the deceased. They refused him, so he fought them with those of his people who were with him over the property, to take it, and they fought him. ʿAwf b. ʿAbd ʿAwf and al-Fākih b. al-Mughīrah were killed, and ʿAffān b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ and his son ʿUthmān escaped. They seized the property of al-Fākih b. al-Mughīrah and the property of ʿAwf b. ʿAbd ʿAwf and went off with it. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf killed Khālid b. Hishām, the killer of his father. Quraysh resolved to raid Banū Jadhīmah, but Banū Jadhīmah said: "The loss of your companions was not by a decision from us. Only some people attacked them out of ignorance and struck them, and we did not know. We will pay you the blood money for whatever of blood or property you have against us." So Quraysh accepted that, and they laid down war.

✧ [Poem of Salmā concerning what was between Jadhīmah and Quraysh] A speaker from Banū Jadhīmah—and some of them say it was a woman called Salmā—said: Had it not been for the people’s saying to the people, “Submit,” Sulaym would have met on that day a butter. Busr and the companions of Jaḥdam and Murrah would have contended with them until they left the kneeling camels as water-carriers. How many you see on the day of al-Ghumayṣāʾ of a young man struck down though unwounded, when he had been a wounder. It clung to the suitors of the widows, and divorced on that morning those of them who had been married. Ibn Hishām said: His saying “Busr” and “it clung to the suitors” is from other than Ibn Isḥāq. [Poem of Ibn Mirdās in reply to Salmā] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbbās b. Mirdās answered him—and it is said, rather al-Jaḥḥāf b. Ḥakīm al-Sulamī—: Leave off your talk of error; we have sufficed as a ram of battle, today and yesterday, a butter. Khālid is more entitled to the excuse than you, on the morning he mounted a clear path of the affair, Aided by God’s command, driving toward you auspicious birds that do not stumble for him, and ill-omened ones. They announced Mālik’s death on the plain when they descended it, frowning in the dust that dims, grim-faced. If we have bereaved you, Salmā, then Mālik— you left upon him wailing women and a wailing man.

✧ [Poem of al-Jaḥḥāf in reply to Salmā] And al-Jaḥḥāf b. Ḥakīm al-Sulamī said: We witnessed with the Prophet marked horses at Ḥunayn, and they were bleeding at the mouths; And the expedition of Khālid they witnessed, and their hooves dragged in the sacred land. We expose to the thrusting of spears when we meet faces that are not exposed to slapping. And I am not one to strip off my garments when the champions shake, nor do I shoot arrows; But rather the colt under me courses to the high points with the sharp cutting sword. [The account of Ibn Abī Ḥadrad, the youth of Jadhīmah, on the day of the conquest] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah b. al-Mughīrah b. al-Akhnas narrated to me, from al-Zuhrī, from Ibn Abī Ḥadrad al-Aslamī, who said: I was that day among the cavalry of Khālid b. al-Walīd, and a youth of Banū Jadhīmah, who was of my age, said to me while his hands had been tied to his neck with a rope, with women gathered not far from him: "O youth." I said: "What do you want?" He said: "Will you take hold of this rope and lead me to these women so that I may fulfill a need to them, then return me afterwards, and you may do with me whatever seems fit to you?" He said: I said: "By God, what you ask is easy." So I took hold of his rope and led him by it until he stood before them. He said: "Greet, Ḥubaysh, upon the passing of life: I showed you when I sought you and found you at Ḥalyah, or I came upon you at al-Khawāniq. Was it not right that a lover be rewarded who undertook the night journey of travel and the midday heat? I have no fault; I said when our people were together: Reward with affection before one of the separations. Reward with affection before the distance stretches far and the commander departs with the beloved who is parting. For I have not neglected a secret of trust, nor has any enchanter pleased my eye after you; Only that what befell the tribe distracts from affection, unless there be mutual love." Ibn Hishām said: Most of the knowledgeable in poetry reject the last two verses as being by him. Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah b. al-Mughīrah b. al-Akhnas narrated to me, from al-Zuhrī, from Ibn Abī Ḥadrad al-Aslamī, (who said) she said: "And you, may you be greeted seven and ten, odd and eight in succession." He said: Then I turned away with him, and his neck was struck. Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Firās b. Abī Sunbulah al-Aslamī narrated to me, from elders among them, from those of them who were present at it, who said: Then she rose to him when his neck was struck, and bent over him, and did not cease kissing him until she died beside him.

✧ [Poem of a man from Banū Jadhīmah on the Day of the Conquest] Ibn Isḥāq said: A man from Banū Jadhīmah said: May God reward Mudlij on our behalf when she became, A recompense of misfortune when she marched and alighted. They stayed over our remnants, dividing them, While spears among us had drunk their fill and been given to drink again. By God, were it not for the religion of the family of Muḥammad, Their horses would have fled and been put to flight. It would not harm them to refrain from aiding a squadron, Like a swarm of locusts sent forth and scattered. Whether they turn aside or return to their affair, We shall not requite them for what they have led astray. [Poem of Wahb in reply to him] Wahb, a man from Banū Layth, answered him, saying: They called ʿĀmir to Islam and the truth, So what is our sin regarding ʿĀmir when she turned away? What is our sin regarding ʿĀmir, may they have no father, Because their minds became foolish and then went astray? And a man from Banū Jadhīmah said: May it gladden Banū Kaʿb, the advance of Khālid And his companions, when the squadrons came upon us at dawn. There is no vengeance pursued by Ibn Khuwaylid, And you would have been spared had you been absent. Neither do our people restrain their foolish ones from us, Nor does the ailment from the day of al-Ghumayṣāʾ depart.

✧ [Poetry of a Jadhīmah boy fleeing ahead of Khālid] A boy from Banū Jadhīmah said, while driving his mother and two sisters before him, fleeing with them from Khālid's army: Let down the trains of the woollen cloaks and slow down; The gait of shy women, as if they were not startled. If women are protected today, then they will be protected. [Rajaz verses of boys with Banū Jadhīmah when they heard of Khālid] Boys from Banū Jadhīmah, called Banū Musāḥiq, recited rajaz when they heard of Khālid. One of them said: Yellow-white one of the flank has come to know, One possessed of small flocks and of camels holds her. I shall avail today as a man avails. The other said: Yellow one who distracts the bride has come to know; A bite from her does not fill the breastbone. I shall strike today a hard and rough blow, The blow of those who cause she-camels to kneel at the place of their halting, ponderous ones. The other said: I swear that no lurking lion with a mane, Coarse of paw-pads on a cold morning, Gloomy of countenance, with reddish whiskers, Growling between a thicket and hard ground, Fierce in devouring men alone, Is more truthful in the morning than I in courage.
