What occurred between Quraysh and Banū Jadhīma of preparation for war and then reconciliation

Translation

✧ [Poem of Salmā concerning what was between Jadhīmah and Quraysh] A speaker from Banū Jadhīmah—and some of them say it was a woman called Salmā—said: Had it not been for the people’s saying to the people, “Submit,” Sulaym would have met on that day a butter. Busr and the companions of Jaḥdam and Murrah would have contended with them until they left the kneeling camels as water-carriers. How many you see on the day of al-Ghumayṣāʾ of a young man struck down though unwounded, when he had been a wounder. It clung to the suitors of the widows, and divorced on that morning those of them who had been married. Ibn Hishām said: His saying “Busr” and “it clung to the suitors” is from other than Ibn Isḥāq. [Poem of Ibn Mirdās in reply to Salmā] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbbās b. Mirdās answered him—and it is said, rather al-Jaḥḥāf b. Ḥakīm al-Sulamī—: Leave off your talk of error; we have sufficed as a ram of battle, today and yesterday, a butter. Khālid is more entitled to the excuse than you, on the morning he mounted a clear path of the affair, Aided by God’s command, driving toward you auspicious birds that do not stumble for him, and ill-omened ones. They announced Mālik’s death on the plain when they descended it, frowning in the dust that dims, grim-faced. If we have bereaved you, Salmā, then Mālik— you left upon him wailing women and a wailing man.
