What occurred between Quraysh and Banū Jadhīma of preparation for war and then reconciliation
Translation
✧ [Poem of al-Jaḥḥāf in reply to Salmā] And al-Jaḥḥāf b. Ḥakīm al-Sulamī said: We witnessed with the Prophet marked horses at Ḥunayn, and they were bleeding at the mouths; And the expedition of Khālid they witnessed, and their hooves dragged in the sacred land. We expose to the thrusting of spears when we meet faces that are not exposed to slapping. And I am not one to strip off my garments when the champions shake, nor do I shoot arrows; But rather the colt under me courses to the high points with the sharp cutting sword. [The account of Ibn Abī Ḥadrad, the youth of Jadhīmah, on the day of the conquest] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah b. al-Mughīrah b. al-Akhnas narrated to me, from al-Zuhrī, from Ibn Abī Ḥadrad al-Aslamī, who said: I was that day among the cavalry of Khālid b. al-Walīd, and a youth of Banū Jadhīmah, who was of my age, said to me while his hands had been tied to his neck with a rope, with women gathered not far from him: "O youth." I said: "What do you want?" He said: "Will you take hold of this rope and lead me to these women so that I may fulfill a need to them, then return me afterwards, and you may do with me whatever seems fit to you?" He said: I said: "By God, what you ask is easy." So I took hold of his rope and led him by it until he stood before them. He said: "Greet, Ḥubaysh, upon the passing of life: I showed you when I sought you and found you at Ḥalyah, or I came upon you at al-Khawāniq. Was it not right that a lover be rewarded who undertook the night journey of travel and the midday heat? I have no fault; I said when our people were together: Reward with affection before one of the separations. Reward with affection before the distance stretches far and the commander departs with the beloved who is parting. For I have not neglected a secret of trust, nor has any enchanter pleased my eye after you; Only that what befell the tribe distracts from affection, unless there be mutual love." Ibn Hishām said: Most of the knowledgeable in poetry reject the last two verses as being by him. Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah b. al-Mughīrah b. al-Akhnas narrated to me, from al-Zuhrī, from Ibn Abī Ḥadrad al-Aslamī, (who said) she said: "And you, may you be greeted seven and ten, odd and eight in succession." He said: Then I turned away with him, and his neck was struck. Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Firās b. Abī Sunbulah al-Aslamī narrated to me, from elders among them, from those of them who were present at it, who said: Then she rose to him when his neck was struck, and bent over him, and did not cease kissing him until she died beside him.
