✧ [The Messenger's dispatch to Muʾtah and his selection of the commanders] Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr related to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ dispatched an expedition to Muʾtah in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year eight. He appointed Zayd b. Ḥārithah over them and said: “If Zayd is struck down, then Jaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib is over the people; and if Jaʿfar is struck down, then ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah is over the people.” [Ibn Rawāḥah's weeping from fear of the Fire and his poem for the Messenger] The people equipped themselves and made ready to go forth, and they were three thousand. When their departure was at hand, the people bade farewell to the commanders of the Messenger of God ﷺ and greeted them. When ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah bade farewell to those commanders of the Messenger of God ﷺ whom he was to leave, he wept. They said: “What makes you weep, O Ibn Rawāḥah?” He said: “By God, it is not love of this world or yearning for you; but I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ recite a verse from the Book of God, Mighty and Majestic, in which He mentions the Fire: ‘There is none of you but will come to it; that is a decree of your Lord, determined.’ I do not know how I shall fare with the emergence after the coming.” The Muslims said: “May God accompany you and defend you and return you to us righteous.” Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said: “But I ask the Merciful for forgiveness, And a blow that causes terror, flinging froth, Or a piercing thrust delivered by a warrior's hands, With a spear that makes the entrails and liver gush forth, So that it may be said when they pass by my grave: ‘God guided him, a warrior, and rightly he was guided.’” Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the people made ready to go forth, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and bade him farewell, then said: “May God make firm the good that He has given you, As He made firm Moses, and grant victory like that they were granted. I have discerned in you the good as a superabundant gift; God knows that I am steady of gaze. You are the Messenger; whoever is denied your superabundant gifts And your countenance, fate has debased him.” Ibn Hishām said: One of the people of knowledge in poetry recited to me these verses: “You are the Messenger; whoever is denied your superabundant gifts And your countenance, fate has debased him. May God make firm the good that He has given you Among the messengers, and grant victory like that they were granted. I have discerned in you the good as a superabundant gift, A discernment that differed in your case from what they observed.” He means the polytheists, and these verses are from a qaṣīdah of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the people set out, and the Messenger of God ﷺ went out until he had bidden them farewell and turned away from them. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said: “Peace be behind the man I bade farewell, Among the palms, the best companion and friend.”

✧ [The people's fear of encountering Heraclius, and Ibn Rawāḥah's poetry encouraging them] Then they went on until they halted at Maʿān, in the land of Syria. The people learned that Heraclius had halted at Maʾāb, in the land of al-Balqāʾ, with a hundred thousand of the Byzantines, and there joined them from Lakhm, Judhām, al-Qayn, Bahrāʾ, and Balī a hundred thousand of their number, led by a man of Balī, then one of Irāshah, called Mālik b. Zāfilah. When that reached the Muslims, they stayed at Maʿān for two nights, pondering their situation, and said: "We shall write to the Messenger of God ﷺ and inform him of the number of our enemy, so that either he may reinforce us with men, or he may command us with his order, and we shall carry it out."

✧ [Ibn Rawāḥah's encouragement of the people to fight] He said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah encouraged the people and said: 'O my people, by God, that which you dislike is the very thing for which you went out seeking—martyrdom. We do not fight people by number, nor by strength, nor by multitude. We fight them only by this religion with which God has honored us. So go forth, for it is but one of the two best things: either victory or martyrdom.' He said: The people said: 'By God, Ibn Rawāḥah has spoken the truth.' So the people went on. ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said concerning their halt: 'We brought the horses from Ajaʾ and Farʿ; the grass made them sleek, and they had loaded saddlebags. We shod them from flint with tough leather soles, as smooth as if its side were tanned hide. They halted two nights at Maʿān; after their slackness came high spirits. We set out in the morning with the steeds branded, the hot wind breathing in their nostrils. No, by the father of my returning-place, we shall surely come to them, even if Arabs and Byzantines are in it. We arrayed their reins, and they came frowning, while the dust for them was a twisted rope. With a host of clamor, as if the helmets in it, when their peaks appeared, were stars. The contented life—its spears have divorced it, so it may marry or be husbandless.' Ibn Hishām said: It is also recited: 'We brought the horses from the thickets of Qurḥ,' and his saying 'We arrayed their reins' is from other than Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the people went on. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr related to me that he was told on the authority of Zayd b. Arqam, who said: I was an orphan in the care of ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah, under his guardianship. He took me out on that journey of his, riding behind him on the pillion of his saddle. By God, while he was traveling by night, I heard him reciting these verses of his: 'When you have carried me and borne my saddle a journey of four nights after al-Ḥisāʾ, then your affair is ease, and blame leaves you; and I shall not return to my family behind me. The Muslims came and left me in the land of Syria, desiring the abode. And every close relative has returned you to the Merciful, cut off from brotherhood. There I care not for the sprouting of untended palms, nor for palm trees whose lower parts are well-watered.' When I heard them from him, I wept. He said: He struck me with the whip and said: 'What is it to you, you little fool, if God grants me martyrdom and you return between the two forks of the saddle?' He said: Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said during part of that journey of his, while chanting in rajaz meter: 'O Zayd, Zayd of the swift, slender camels, the night has grown long—may you be guided—so dismount.'

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: The people went on until, when they were at the borders of al-Balqāʾ, the armies of Heraclius from the Byzantines and Arabs met them at a village of the villages of al-Balqāʾ called Mashārif. Then the enemy drew near, and the Muslims withdrew to a village called Muʾtah. The people met there, and the Muslims drew up in battle order for them. They placed over their right wing a man from Banū ʿUdhrah called Quṭbah b. Qatādah, and over their left wing a man from the Anṣār called ʿUbāyah b. Mālik. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said ʿUbādah b. Mālik. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the people met and fought. Zayd b. Ḥārithah fought with the banner of the Messenger of God ﷺ until he was slain amid the spears of the people.

✧ [The command of Jaʿfar and his killing] Then Jaʿfar took it and fought with it, until when the fighting beset him, he leapt from a chestnut mare of his, hamstrung her, then fought the people until he was killed. Jaʿfar was the first man among the Muslims to hamstring a horse in Islam. Yaḥyā b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr narrated to me, from his father ʿAbbād, who said: My father, who suckled me—he was one of the Banū Murrah b. ʿAwf and was in that expedition, the expedition of Muʾtah—narrated to me: By God, it is as if I am looking at Jaʿfar when he leapt from a chestnut mare of his, then hamstrung her, then fought until he was killed, while he was saying: O how excellent is the Garden and its approach, Goodly and cool is its drink, And the Romans, Romans whose punishment has drawn near, Disbelieving, with remote lineages, Upon me, when I meet them, is their striking. Ibn Hishām said: One I trust among the people of knowledge narrated to me that Jaʿfar b. For that, God rewarded him with two wings in the Garden with which he flies wherever he wishes. It is said that a man of the Romans struck him that day with a blow and cut him into two halves.

✧ He said: When Jaʿfar was killed, ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah took the banner, then advanced with it while he was on his horse. He began to coax himself to dismount and hesitated somewhat, then he said: I swear, O self, you shall dismount, you shall dismount or be forced to. If the people raise a clamor and intensify the din, why do I see you disliking Paradise? Long have you been at ease. Are you anything but a drop in a worn waterskin? He also said: O self, if you are not killed, you will die; this is the heat of death that has come. What you have wished for has been given you; if you do as the two did, you will be guided— meaning his two companions, Zayd and Jaʿfar. Then he dismounted. When he dismounted, a cousin of his came to him with a bone of meat and said, "Bind up your spine with this, for you have met in these days of yours what you have met." He took it from his hand, then tore off a morsel from it with his teeth. Then he heard the clash of weapons in the direction of the people, and he said, "And you are still in this world!" Then he threw it from his hand, took his sword and advanced, and fought until he was killed. [Ibn al-Walīd and his withdrawal with the people] Then Thābit b. Aqram, the brother of the Banū al-ʿAjlān, took the banner and said, "O company of Muslims, agree upon a man among you." They said, "You." He said, "I shall not do it." So the people agreed upon Khālid b. al-Walīd. When he took the banner, he held off the enemy, shielded them with it, then withdrew and was withdrawn from, until he returned with the people.

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: When the people were struck down, the Messenger of God ﷺ said, according to what reached me: Zayd b. Ḥārithah took the banner and fought with it until he was killed as a martyr; then Jaʿfar took it and fought with it until he was killed as a martyr. He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ fell silent until the faces of the Anṣār changed, and they thought that there had been in ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah something they disliked. Then he said: Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah took it and fought with it until he was killed as a martyr. Then he said: They were raised up to me in Paradise, as the sleeper sees, on couches of gold, and I saw in the couch of ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah a tilting away from the couches of his two companions. I said: Why is this? It was said to me: They went on, while ʿAbd Allāh hesitated somewhat, then went on.

✧ The Messenger's grief for Jaʿfar and his injunction concerning his family. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr narrated to me from Umm ʿĪsā al-Khuzāʿiyyah from Umm Jaʿfar bt. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib, from her grandmother Asmāʾ bt. ʿUmays, who said: When Jaʿfar and his companions were struck down, the Messenger of God ﷺ came in to me, and I had tanned forty manā (Ibn Hishām said: it is also related as forty manīʾah), kneaded my dough, washed my sons, anointed them, and cleaned them. She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: "Bring me the sons of Jaʿfar." She said: I brought them to him, and he sniffed them, and his eyes overflowed. I said: "O Messenger of God, by my father and mother, what makes you weep? Has something reached you about Jaʿfar and his companions?" He said: "Yes, they were struck down this day." She said: I arose crying out, and the women gathered around me, and the Messenger of God ﷺ went out to his family and said: "Do not neglect the family of Jaʿfar in preparing food for them, for they are preoccupied with the affair of their companion." And ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad narrated to me from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who said: When the news of Jaʿfar's death came, we recognized sorrow in the face of the Messenger of God ﷺ. She said: A man entered upon him and said: "O Messenger of God, the women have distressed us and tempted us." He said: "Return to them and silence them." She said: He went, then came back and said the like to him. He said: "You say; and perhaps affectation harms its people." She said: He said: "Go and silence them, and if they refuse, throw dust into their mouths." She said: I said to myself: "May God distance you! By God, you have not spared yourself, and you are not obeying the Messenger of God ﷺ." She said: I knew that he would not be able to throw dust into their mouths. Ibn Isḥāq said: Quṭbah b. Qatādah al-ʿUdhrī, who was over the right wing of the Muslims, had charged against Mālik b. Zāfilah and killed him. Quṭbah b. Qatādah said: I thrust Ibn Zāfilah b. al-Irāsh with a spear that went through him, then it broke. I struck his neck a blow, and he bent as a branch of the salam tree bends. And we drove the women of his paternal cousins on the morning of Raqawqayn like driving cattle. Ibn Hishām said: His words "Ibn al-Irāsh" are from other than Ibn Isḥāq; and the third verse is from Khallād b. Qurrah. It is also said: Mālik b. Rāfilah.

✧ The soothsayer of Ḥadas and her warning to her people Ibn Isḥāq said: There was a soothsayer of Ḥadas who, when she heard of the Messenger of God’s ﷺ army approaching, said to her people of Ḥadas—and her people were a sub-tribe called Banū Ghanm—“I warn you of a people with piercing eyes, looking askance, leading horses in successive waves, shedding dark blood.” So they heeded her words and withdrew from among Lakhm, and thereafter Ḥadas remained very numerous. Those who bore the brunt of the war that day were Banū Thaʿlabah, a sub-tribe of Ḥadas, and thereafter they remained few. When Khālid turned back with the men, he brought them homeward. The return of the army, the Messenger’s reception of it, and the Muslims’ anger Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr related to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr. He said: When they drew near the outskirts of Madinah, the Messenger of God ﷺ and the Muslims met them. He said: The boys ran out to meet them, while the Messenger of God ﷺ was approaching with the people on a mount. He said: “Take the boys and carry them, and give me the son of Jaʿfar.” ʿAbd Allāh was brought to him, and he took him and carried him before him. He said: The people began throwing dust at the army and saying, “O you who fled! You fled in the path of God!” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “They are not those who fled; rather they are those who return to fight, if God Almighty wills.” Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr related to me, from ʿĀmir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, from some of the family of al-Ḥārith b. Hishām—who were his maternal uncles—from Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ. He said: Umm Salamah said to the wife of Salamah b. Hishām b. al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Mughīrah, “Why do I not see Salamah attending the prayer with the Messenger of God ﷺ and with the Muslims?” She said, “By God, he cannot go out. Every time he goes out, the people shout at him, ‘O you who fled! You fled in the path of God,’ until he has stayed in his house and does not go out.”

✧ [The poetry of Qays in apology for the retreat of Khālid] Ibn Isḥāq said: Concerning what happened to the people and to Khālid, his extricating the people and his withdrawal with them, Qays b. al-Musaḥḥar al-Yaʿmarī said, apologizing for what he did that day and what the people did: By God, my soul will not cease to blame me for my stance, while the horses were gathered before me. I stood there, neither seeking protection nor passing through, nor preventing anyone for whom death had been decreed. Yet I consoled myself with Khālid—surely Khālid among the people has no equal. My soul surged toward Jaʿfar at Muʾtah, when the arrow no longer availed the archer. He drew to us the two sides of both of them—emigrants, not polytheists nor unarmed. Thus Qays clarified in his poetry what the people disagreed about in that matter: that the people held back and disliked death, and he affirmed Khālid's withdrawal with those who were with him. Ibn Hishām said: As for al-Zuhrī, he said in what has reached us from him: The Muslims appointed Khālid b. al-Walīd over themselves, and God granted them victory through him, and he remained over them until he returned to the Prophet ﷺ.

✧ [Ḥassān’s poetry in mourning the slain of Muʾtah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Among the verses with which the companions of Muʾtah from the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ were mourned was the saying of Ḥassān b. Thābit: A night in Yathrib returned to me, a hard one, and a care, whenever people slept, kept me sleepless, because of remembering a beloved who stirred in me a flowing tear, for the causes of weeping are remembrance. Indeed, losing the beloved is a calamity, and many a noble man is tried and then endures. I saw the best of the believers go down in succession to Shuʿūb, while after them a replacement lingered behind. May God never put far away the slain who followed one another at Muʾtah, among them the possessor of the two wings, Jaʿfar, and Zayd and ʿAbd Allāh, when they followed one another all together, while the causes of death strode about, on the morning they led the believers away, guiding them to death, a fortunate, radiant commander, a fair one, like the light of the full moon, of the family of Hāshim, proud and bold when injustice was demanded of him. He thrust with his spear until he fell, unpillowed, in a battle in which spear-shafts shattered. So he went to be among those who were slain; his reward is paradises and intertwined gardens, green. We used to see in Jaʿfar, from Muḥammad, faithfulness and a resolute command when he ordered. Never ceased, in Islam, from the family of Hāshim, foundations of might that do not slip, and a glory. They are the mountain of Islam, and the people around them are boulders beneath a peak that dazzles and overpowers. Chiefs among them are Jaʿfar and his mother’s son, ʿAlī, and among them Aḥmad, the chosen one, and Ḥamzah and al-ʿAbbās among them, and among them ʿAqīl, and the water of the wood from where it is pressed. Through them hardship is dispelled in every strait, dark and confusing, when the path out is too narrow for people. They are the friends of God; He sent down His judgment upon them, and among them is this purified book.

✧ [The poetry of Kaʿb in weeping for the slain of Muʾtah] Kaʿb b. Mālik said: The eyes slept, while the tears of your eye flow Copiously, as the full rain-cloud pours down, In a night whose cares came upon me, At times I yearn, and at times I toss and turn. Grief has returned to me, so I passed the night as if I were Entrusted to the Daughters of the Bier and al-Simāk. It is as if, between my ribs and my entrails, From what has come upon me, a fiery brand has been inserted, Out of love for the band who followed one another On a day at Muʾtah; they were laid down, not carried away. God's blessing be upon them, youth of a band, And may the lowering clouds water their bones. They held firm at Muʾtah for God's sake, their souls, In fear of destruction and dread of holding back. They went on before the Muslims, as if they were Stallion-camels upon which trailing iron is draped, When they were guided by Jaʿfar and his banner At the front of their first; how excellent was the first! Until the ranks parted, and Jaʿfar, Where the rough ground of the ranks met, lay thrown down. The shining moon was altered by his loss, And the sun was eclipsed and nearly set. A chief whose edifice rose from Hāshim, A lofty branch and a lordship that is not transferred, A people by whom God protected His servants, And upon whom the sent-down Book descended. They surpassed the tribes in might and generosity, And their forbearance covered over the ignorant. They do not let loose their reins to folly, And their orator is seen to decide with truth. White of face, you see the palms of their hands Moist when the barren time apologizes. By their guidance God is pleased for His creation, And by their fortune the sent Prophet was aided.

I was anxious and said when his death was announced to me: Who will take up the sword in battle by the eagle standard and its shade, with the white blades when they are drawn from their scabbards, striking, with spears raining down and their thrusts, after the blessed Jaʿfar, son of Fāṭimah, the best of all creation and its most glorious, the heaviest loss, the noblest in lineage among them all, the mightiest in seeking redress for wrongs and most steadfast, for the truth when it befalls, without false pretence, the most generous of hand, the least obscene in speech, the most abundant in merit when asked for bounty, the most open-handed in giving, the most devoted to kindness, none like him among the living of all creation except Muḥammad.

✧ [POEM OF ḤASSĀN IN LAMENT FOR IBN ḤĀRITHAH AND IBN RAWĀḤAH] Ḥassān b. Thābit said on the day of Muʾtah, weeping for Zayd b. Ḥārithah and ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah: My eye, flow freely with your copious tears, and remember in times of ease the people of the graves. Remember Muʾtah and what befell therein, on the day they marched forth in the encounter of the midday raid. When they marched and left behind there Zayd — an excellent refuge for the destitute and the captive — the beloved of the best of all mankind altogether, the master of mankind, whose love is in the breasts. That is Aḥmad, than whom there is no other; that is my grief for him, together with my joy. Truly Zayd was of us by a command that was not the command of a lying, deluded one. Then weep for the Khazrajī with tears — he was a lord there, no niggard. What has come to us of their killing suffices us, so in sorrow we pass the night, not in joy. A poet among the Muslims, one of those who returned from the expedition of Muʾtah, said: It is enough sorrow for me that I returned while Jaʿfar, Zayd, and ʿAbd Allāh are in the dust of graves. They fulfilled their vow when they went on their way, and I was left for affliction with those who remain behind — three men who were sent forward and went forward to a red, hateful watering-place of death.
