The Messenger's grief for Jaʿfar and his instructions regarding his family

✧ [Ḥassān’s poetry in mourning the slain of Muʾtah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Among the verses with which the companions of Muʾtah from the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ were mourned was the saying of Ḥassān b. Thābit: A night in Yathrib returned to me, a hard one, and a care, whenever people slept, kept me sleepless, because of remembering a beloved who stirred in me a flowing tear, for the causes of weeping are remembrance. Indeed, losing the beloved is a calamity, and many a noble man is tried and then endures. I saw the best of the believers go down in succession to Shuʿūb, while after them a replacement lingered behind. May God never put far away the slain who followed one another at Muʾtah, among them the possessor of the two wings, Jaʿfar, and Zayd and ʿAbd Allāh, when they followed one another all together, while the causes of death strode about, on the morning they led the believers away, guiding them to death, a fortunate, radiant commander, a fair one, like the light of the full moon, of the family of Hāshim, proud and bold when injustice was demanded of him. He thrust with his spear until he fell, unpillowed, in a battle in which spear-shafts shattered. So he went to be among those who were slain; his reward is paradises and intertwined gardens, green. We used to see in Jaʿfar, from Muḥammad, faithfulness and a resolute command when he ordered. Never ceased, in Islam, from the family of Hāshim, foundations of might that do not slip, and a glory. They are the mountain of Islam, and the people around them are boulders beneath a peak that dazzles and overpowers. Chiefs among them are Jaʿfar and his mother’s son, ʿAlī, and among them Aḥmad, the chosen one, and Ḥamzah and al-ʿAbbās among them, and among them ʿAqīl, and the water of the wood from where it is pressed. Through them hardship is dispelled in every strait, dark and confusing, when the path out is too narrow for people. They are the friends of God; He sent down His judgment upon them, and among them is this purified book.
