Translation
✧ [POEM OF ḤASSĀN IN LAMENT FOR IBN ḤĀRITHAH AND IBN RAWĀḤAH] Ḥassān b. Thābit said on the day of Muʾtah, weeping for Zayd b. Ḥārithah and ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah: My eye, flow freely with your copious tears, and remember in times of ease the people of the graves. Remember Muʾtah and what befell therein, on the day they marched forth in the encounter of the midday raid. When they marched and left behind there Zayd — an excellent refuge for the destitute and the captive — the beloved of the best of all mankind altogether, the master of mankind, whose love is in the breasts. That is Aḥmad, than whom there is no other; that is my grief for him, together with my joy. Truly Zayd was of us by a command that was not the command of a lying, deluded one. Then weep for the Khazrajī with tears — he was a lord there, no niggard. What has come to us of their killing suffices us, so in sorrow we pass the night, not in joy. A poet among the Muslims, one of those who returned from the expedition of Muʾtah, said: It is enough sorrow for me that I returned while Jaʿfar, Zayd, and ʿAbd Allāh are in the dust of graves. They fulfilled their vow when they went on their way, and I was left for affliction with those who remain behind — three men who were sent forward and went forward to a red, hateful watering-place of death.
