✧ Mention of the Emigrants to Madinah [The Migration of Abū Salamah and His Wife, and Her Account of What They Encountered] The first of the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ to emigrate to Madinah from among the Emigrants of Quraysh, of the Banū Makhzūm, was Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Asad b. Hilāl b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm – his given name was ʿAbd Allāh. He emigrated to Madinah a year before the pledge of al-ʿAqabah. He had arrived in Makkah to the Messenger of God ﷺ from the land of Abyssinia. When Quraysh harmed him and news reached him of the Islam of those of the Anṣār who had embraced Islam, he departed for Madinah as an emigrant. Ibn Isḥāq said: My father Isḥāq b. Yasār related to me, from Salamah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Abī Salamah, from his grandmother Umm Salamah, wife of the Prophet ﷺ. She said: When Abū Salamah resolved to depart for Madinah, he saddled his camel for me, then seated me on it, and placed with me my son Salamah b. Abī Salamah in my lap. Then he set out with me, leading my camel. When the men of Banū al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm saw him, they rose against him and said: “This is yourself; you have overcome us regarding it. But do you see this companion of yours? How could we let you travel with her through the land?” She said: So they snatched the camel’s halter from his hand and took me away from him. She said: At that, the Banū ʿAbd al-Asad, the clan of Abū Salamah, became angry and said: “No, by God, we will not leave our son with her now that you have taken her from our companion.” She said: So they pulled my son Salamah between them until they dislocated his hand, and the Banū ʿAbd al-Asad went off with him, while the Banū al-Mughīrah detained me with them. My husband Abū Salamah departed for Madinah. She said: Thus I was separated from my husband and from my son. She said: I would go out every morning and sit in al-Abṭaḥ, and I did not cease weeping until evening, for a year or close to it, until a man of my paternal cousins, one of the Banū al-Mughīrah, passed by me. He saw what I was in and took pity on me, and said to the Banū al-Mughīrah: “Will you not let this poor woman go? You have separated her from her husband and her child.” She said: So they said to me: “Join your husband if you wish.” She said: And the Banū ʿAbd al-Asad returned my son to me at that. She said: So I saddled my camel, took my son and placed him in my lap, and set out seeking my husband in Madinah. She said: And there was not one of God’s creatures with me. She said: I said: I will manage with whomever I meet until I reach my husband. When I was at al-Tanʿīm, I met ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah b. Abī Ṭalḥah, brother of the Banū ʿAbd al-Dār. He said to me: “Where to, O daughter of Abū Umayyah?” She said: I said: “I seek my husband in Madinah.” He said: “Is there no one with you?” She said: I said: “No, by God, except God and this little son of mine.” He said: “By God, you shall not be left.” Then he took hold of the camel’s halter and went along with me, walking briskly. By God, I have never accompanied a man of the Arabs whom I considered more noble than he. When he reached a halting place, he made my camel kneel, then he withdrew from me. When I had dismounted, he withdrew with my camel, removed its load, then hobbled it to a tree. Then he turned aside to a tree and lay down beneath it. When the time of departure drew near, he came to my camel, brought it forward, saddled it, then withdrew from me and said: “Mount.” When I had mounted and settled on my camel, he came, took hold of its halter, and led it until he stopped with me. He kept doing that for me until he brought me to Madinah. When he looked at the village of Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf at Qubāʾ, he said: “Your husband is in this village – for Abū Salamah was staying there – enter it with God’s blessing.” Then he turned back to Makkah. She said: She used to say: By God, I know of no household in Islam afflicted as the family of Abū Salamah was afflicted, and I have never seen a companion more noble than ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah.

✧ [The emigration of ʿĀmir and his wife, and the emigration of the Banū Jaḥsh] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the first of the Emigrants to arrive there after Abū Salamah was ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah, the confederate of the Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb, accompanied by his wife Laylā bt. Abī Ḥathmah b. Ghānim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAwf b. ʿUbayd b. ʿAdī b. Kaʿb. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh b. Riʾāb b. Yaʿmur b. Ṣabrah b. Murrah b. Kathīr b. Ghanm b. Dūdān b. Asad b. Khuzaymah, the confederate of the Banū Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams, departed with his family and with his brother ʿAbd b. Jaḥsh, who was Abū Aḥmad — and Abū Aḥmad was a man blind of sight, and he used to go around Makkah, its upper and lower parts, without a guide, and he was a poet, and he had with him al-Farʿah bt. Abī Sufyān b. Ḥarb, and his mother was Umaymah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim — so the house of the Banū Jaḥsh was locked up as an emigration. ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah, al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and Abū Jahl b. Hishām b. al-Mughīrah passed by it — and it is the house of Abān b. ʿUthmān today, the one at al-Radm — while they were ascending to upper Makkah. ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah looked at it, its doors flapping, empty, with no inhabitant in it. When he saw it like that, he heaved a deep sigh and then said: And every dwelling, however long its safety lasts, will one day be overtaken by calamity and ḥubūb. Ibn Hishām said: This verse is by Abū Dāwūd al-Iyādī in a poem of his. Al-ḥubūb means anguish. (In another place it means need; and it is said that al-ḥūb is sin.)

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: Then ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah said: The abode of Banū Jaḥsh has become empty of its people. Abū Jahl said: And why do you weep over it, over a few of a few? Ibn Hishām said: al-qull means the single one. Labīd b. Rabīʿah said: All the sons of a free woman, their destiny is qull, even if they are many in number. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then he said: This is the doing of this son of my brother. He has divided our community, scattered our affairs, and severed relations between us. The dwelling of Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Asad, ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah, ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh, and his brother Abū Aḥmad b. Jaḥsh was with Mubashshir b. ʿAbd al-Mundhir b. ✧ [The emigration of their women] Among their women were: Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh, Umm Ḥabīb bt. Jaḥsh, Judhāmah bt. Jandal, Umm Qays bt. Muḥṣan, Umm Ḥabīb bt. Thumāmah, Āminah bt. Ruqaysh, Sakhbarah bt. Tamīm, and Ḥamnah bt. Jaḥsh. [The poem of Abū Aḥmad b. Jaḥsh concerning the emigration of the Banū Asad] Abū Aḥmad b. Jaḥsh b. Riʾāb said, mentioning the emigration of the Banū Asad b. Khuzaymah from his people to God the Exalted and to His Messenger ﷺ, and their complete departure in that when they were called to emigration: Even if Umm Aḥmad swore between al-Ṣafā and its Marwah by God, her oath would be fulfilled; We are the ones who were there, then we did not cease to be in Makkah until its fat became lean. Ghanm b. Dūdān pitched tents there and built, but Ghanm did not set out early and its household did not become light; To God they go early between pairs and singles, and the religion of God's Messenger with truth is their religion. Abū Aḥmad b. Jaḥsh also said: When Umm Aḥmad saw me setting out early under the protection of One whom I fear in the unseen and am wary of, She said: If you must do so, then head with us to the lands, and let Yathrib be distant. I said to her: Nay, Yathrib today is our destination, and whatever the Merciful wills, the servant undertakes; To God I turn my face and to the Messenger, and whoever turns his face to God one day is not disappointed. How many a sincere bosom friend we have left behind, and a sincere woman weeping with tears and lamenting, Who thinks that our departure from our land is a loss, while we think that we seek desirable things. I called the Banū Ghanm to preserve their blood, and to the truth when a place of resort appeared to the people; They answered with praise to God when a caller called them to the truth, and success, and they departed completely. We and companions of ours who parted from guidance aided against us with weapons and raised a clamor, Like two parties: one of them granted success, guided to the truth, and a party tormented; They tyrannized and wished a lie, and Iblīs made them slip from the truth, so they failed and were disappointed. We submitted to the word of the Prophet Muḥammad, so the guardians of the truth among us were good and were made good. We claim kinship through wombs close to them, but there is no closeness through wombs when we are not brought near. Which sister's son after us will feel safe from you, and which in-law after my in-law will be watched over? You will learn one day which of us, when you separate, and the affair of the people is distinguished, is more correct for the truth. Ibn Hishām said: His words "and let Yathrib be distant" and his words "when we are not brought near" are from someone other than Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn Hishām said: By his words "idh" he means "idhā," like the saying of God, Mighty and Majestic: "idh al-ẓālimūna mawqūfūna ʿinda rabbihim" (when the wrongdoers are made to stand before their Lord). Abū al-Najm al-ʿIjlī said: Then God rewarded him on our behalf when He rewarded — gardens of ʿAdn in the high places and the heights.

✧ The emigration of ʿUmar and the story of ʿAyyāsh with him. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb and ʿAyyāsh b. Abī Rabīʿah al-Makhzūmī went out until they arrived in Madinah. Nāfiʿ, the mawlā of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, related to me from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, from his father ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, who said: When we intended to emigrate to Madinah, I, ʿAyyāsh b. Abī Rabīʿah, and Hishām b. al-ʿĀṣī b. Wāʾil al-Sahmī made an appointment at al-Tanāḍib, by the waters of Banū Ghifār, above Sarif. We said, 'Whichever of us is not there by morning has been detained, so let his two companions go on.' He said: In the morning I and ʿAyyāsh b. Abī Rabīʿah were at al-Tanāḍub, but Hishām was detained from us; he was put to trial and succumbed to it.

✧ [The deception of Abū Jahl and al-Ḥārith concerning ʿAyyāsh] When we arrived in Madinah, we stayed among the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf at Qubāʾ. Abū Jahl b. Hishām and al-Ḥārith b. Hishām went out to ʿAyyāsh b. Abī Rabīʿah—he was their paternal cousin and their maternal brother—until they came to us in Madinah, while the Messenger of God ﷺ was in Makkah. They spoke to him and said: 'Your mother has vowed that no comb shall touch her head until she sees you, and that she shall not seek shade from the sun until she sees you.' So he felt compassion for her. I said to him: 'O ʿAyyāsh, by God, the people want only to tempt you away from your religion, so beware of them. By God, if lice were to afflict your mother, she would comb her hair, and if the heat of Makkah became severe upon her, she would seek shade.' He said: 'I will fulfill my mother's oath, and I have property there, so I will take it.' I said: 'By God, you know that I am among the wealthiest of Quraysh; you may have half of my wealth, and do not go with them.' But he refused to do anything but depart with them. When he insisted on that, I said to him: 'Since you have done what you have done, take this she-camel of mine, for she is a noble and docile camel; keep to her back, and if any doubt from the people arises in you, flee upon her.' So he departed upon her with them, until when they were on part of the road, Abū Jahl said to him: 'O son of my brother, by God, I find my camel here to be rough; will you not mount me behind you on this she-camel of yours?' He said: 'Yes.' So he made his camel kneel, and they made theirs kneel, so that he could move onto hers. When they were all on the ground, they fell upon him, bound him, and tied him up. Then they entered Makkah with him and tempted him, and he was tempted. Ibn Isḥāq said: Some of the family of ʿAyyāsh b. Abī Rabīʿah told me that when they entered Makkah with him, they entered with him in the daytime, bound. Then they said: 'O people of Makkah, thus do to your foolish ones, as we have done to this foolish one of ours.'

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: Nāfiʿ related to me, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, from ʿUmar, in his ḥadīth, who said: We used to say: God will not accept from anyone who was tempted either a turn or a ransom or a repentance—a people who knew God, then returned to unbelief because of a trial that befell them. He said: They used to say that about themselves. When the Messenger of God ﷺ arrived in Madinah, God most high sent down concerning them, and concerning our saying and their saying about themselves: 'Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of God. Indeed, God forgives all sins. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful. And turn to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped. And follow the best of what has been sent down to you from your Lord before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you do not perceive.' ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: I wrote it with my own hand on a sheet and sent it to Hishām b. al-ʿĀṣī. He said: Hishām b. al-ʿĀṣī said: When it came to me, I began to read it at Dhū Ṭuwā, going up with it there and going down, not understanding it, until I said: O God, make me understand it. He said: Then God most high cast into my heart that it was sent down only concerning us, and concerning what we used to say about ourselves and what was said about us. He said: So I went back to my camel, mounted it, and caught up with the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was in Madinah.

✧ [The departure of al-Walīd b. al-Walīd to Makkah concerning the affair of ʿAyyāsh and Hishām] Ibn Hishām said: One whom I trust narrated to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ, while in Madinah, said: "Who will bring me ʿAyyāsh b. Abī Rabīʿah and Hishām b. al-ʿĀṣī?" Al-Walīd b. al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah said: "I will bring them to you, O Messenger of God." So he set out to Makkah and arrived there secretly. He met a woman carrying food and said to her: "Where are you heading, O maidservant of God?" She said: "I am heading to these two prisoners"—meaning them. He followed her until he knew their location. They were imprisoned in a house that had no roof. When evening came, he climbed over to them, then took a flint stone and placed it under their shackles, then struck them with his sword and cut them. For that reason, his sword was called Dhū al-Marwah (Possessor of the Flint Stone). Then he carried them on his camel and drove them away. He stumbled and his finger bled, so he said: "Are you anything but a finger that has bled, And in the path of God what you have suffered?" Then he brought them to the Messenger of God ﷺ in Madinah.

By God, that will not happen. So Ṣuhayb said to them: Do you think that if I make my wealth over to you, you will let me go my way? They said: Yes. He said: Then I have made my wealth over to you. ✧ [His ﷺ permission to the Muslims of Makkah to emigrate] Ibn Isḥāq said: When God, may He be exalted, permitted him ﷺ to wage war, and this clan of the Anṣār pledged allegiance to him upon Islam and upon supporting him and those who followed him, and gave shelter to those Muslims who came to them, the Messenger of God ﷺ commanded his companions among the Emigrants from his own people and those Muslims who were with him in Makkah to depart to Madinah and to emigrate to it, and to join their brothers among the Anṣār. He said: “God, mighty and glorious is He, has made for you brothers and a dwelling in which you will be safe.” So they went out in groups, while the Messenger of God ﷺ remained in Makkah, waiting for his Lord to grant him permission to leave Makkah and emigrate to Madinah.
