Translation

✧ [The emigration of ʿĀmir and his wife, and the emigration of the Banū Jaḥsh] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the first of the Emigrants to arrive there after Abū Salamah was ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah, the confederate of the Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb, accompanied by his wife Laylā bt. Abī Ḥathmah b. Ghānim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAwf b. ʿUbayd b. ʿAdī b. Kaʿb. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh b. Riʾāb b. Yaʿmur b. Ṣabrah b. Murrah b. Kathīr b. Ghanm b. Dūdān b. Asad b. Khuzaymah, the confederate of the Banū Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams, departed with his family and with his brother ʿAbd b. Jaḥsh, who was Abū Aḥmad — and Abū Aḥmad was a man blind of sight, and he used to go around Makkah, its upper and lower parts, without a guide, and he was a poet, and he had with him al-Farʿah bt. Abī Sufyān b. Ḥarb, and his mother was Umaymah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim — so the house of the Banū Jaḥsh was locked up as an emigration. ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah, al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and Abū Jahl b. Hishām b. al-Mughīrah passed by it — and it is the house of Abān b. ʿUthmān today, the one at al-Radm — while they were ascending to upper Makkah. ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah looked at it, its doors flapping, empty, with no inhabitant in it. When he saw it like that, he heaved a deep sigh and then said: And every dwelling, however long its safety lasts, will one day be overtaken by calamity and ḥubūb. Ibn Hishām said: This verse is by Abū Dāwūd al-Iyādī in a poem of his. Al-ḥubūb means anguish. (In another place it means need; and it is said that al-ḥūb is sin.)
