35. Renting
«كَانَ زَكَرِيَّا نَجَّارًا»

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَجْتَنِي الْكَبَاثَ فَقَالَ «عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْأَسْوَدِ فَإِنَّهُ أَطْيَبُ» فَقُلْنَا وَكُنْتَ تَرْعَى الْغَنَمَ قَالَ «نَعَمْ وَهَلْ مِنْ نَبِيٍّ إِلَّا قَدْ رَعَاهَا»
✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ picking kabath, and he said, 'Take the black ones, for they are the best.' We said, 'Did you use to shepherd sheep?' He said, 'Yes, and there is no prophet but that he shepherded them.'
كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَجْتَنِي الْكَبَاثَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْأَسْوَدِ مِنْهُ فَإِنَّهُ أَطْيَبُ وَإِنِّي كُنْتُ آكُلُهُ زَمَنَ كُنْتُ أَرْعَى» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَكُنْتَ تَرْعَى؟ فَقَالَ «وَهَلْ بُعِثَ نَبِيٌّ إِلَّا وَهُوَ رَاعٍ»
✧ We were with the Prophet ﷺ and we were picking kabath, and the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Take the black ones from it, for they are the best. I used to eat them when I was a shepherd.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, were you a shepherd?' He said, 'And no prophet was sent except that he was a shepherd.'

أَنَّهُ كَانَ ابْنَ عَشَرِ سِنِينَ مَقْدِمَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ فَكُنَّ أُمَّهَاتِي يُحَرِّضْنَنِي عَلَى خِدْمَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «فَخَدَمْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَشْرًا حَيَاتَهُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَتُوُفِّيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَأَنَا ابْنُ عِشْرِينَ سَنَةً» قَالَ «وَكُنْتُ أَعْلَمَ النَّاسِ بِشَأْنِ الْحِجَابِ حِينَ أُنْزِلَ لَقَدْ كَانَ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ يَسْأَلُنِي عَنْهُ» قَالَ «وَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَا أُنْزِلَ فِي مُبْتَنَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِزَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ أَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِهَا عَرُوسًا فَدَعَا الْقَوْمَ فَأَصَابُوا مِنَ الطَّعَامِ وَخَرَجُوا وَبَقِيَ مِنْهُمْ رَهْطٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَطَالُوا الْمُكْثَ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ وَخَرَجْتُ مَعَهُ لِكَيْ يَخْرُجُوا فَمَشَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَمَشَيْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى جَاءَ عَتَبَةَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ ثُمَّ ظَنَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَى زَيْنَبَ وَإِذَا هُمْ جُلُوسٌ لَمْ يَقُومُوا فَرَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى بَلَغَ عَتْبَةَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ فَظَنَّ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ فَإِذَا هُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا فَضَرَبَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ سِتْرًا وَأُنْزِلَ الْحِجَابُ»
✧ He was ten years old when the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah. So my mothers used to urge me to serve the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: 'So I served the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for ten years during his life in Madinah, and the Prophet ﷺ died when I was twenty years old.' He said: 'And I was the most knowledgeable of people about the matter of the hijab when it was revealed. Ubayy b. Ka'b used to ask me about it.' He said: 'And the first part of what was revealed concerning the wedding of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Zaynab bt. Jahsh was that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became a bridegroom with her. He invited the people, and they ate the food and left. A group of them remained with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they prolonged their stay. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and went out, and I went out with him so that they might leave. He walked, and I walked with him until he reached the threshold of 'A'ishah's room. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ thought that they had left, so he returned, and I returned with him until he entered upon Zaynab, and there they were sitting and had not gotten up. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned, and I returned with him until he reached the threshold of 'A'ishah's room. He thought that they had left, so he returned, and I returned, and there they had left. So he put a screen between them and him, and the hijab was revealed.'
أَنَّ نَفَرًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَرُّوا بِحَيٍّ مِنْ أَحْيَاءِ الْعَرَبِ وَفِيهِمْ لَدِيغٌ أَوْ سَلِيمٌ فَقَالُوا هَلْ فِيكُمْ مِنْ رَاقٍ فَانْطَلَقَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ فَرَقَاهُ عَلَى شَاءٍ فَبَرَأَ فَلَمَّا أَتَى أَصْحَابُهُ كَرِهُوا ذَلِكَ فَقَالُوا أَخَذْتَ عَلَى كِتَابِ اللَّهِ أَجْرًا فَلَمَّا قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ بِذَلِكَ فَدَعَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الرَّجُلَ فَسَأَلَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا مَرَرْنَا بِحَيٍّ مِنْ أَحْيَاءِ الْعَرَبِ فِيهِمْ لَدِيغٌ أَوْ سَلِيمٌ فَقَالُوا هَلْ فِيكُمْ مِنْ رَاقٍ فَرَقَيْتُهُ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ فَبَرَأَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ أَحَقَّ مَا أَخَذْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا كِتَابُ اللَّهِ»
✧ A group of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a tribe among the Arab tribes, and among them was someone stung or bitten. They said, 'Is there any raqi among you?' A man from among them went and performed ruqyah on him for a flock of sheep, and he was cured. When he came to his companions, they disliked that and said, 'You took a fee for the Book of Allah.' When they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they told him about that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the man and asked him, and he said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we passed by a tribe among the Arab tribes, and among them was someone stung or bitten. They said, "Is there any raqi among you?" So I performed ruqyah on him with the Opening of the Book, and he was cured.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The most deserving thing for which you have taken a fee is the Book of Allah.'
جَلَبْتُ أَنَا وَمَخْرَفَةُ الْعَبْدِيُّ بَزًّا مِنْ هَجَرَ فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَاوَمَنَا سَرَاوِيلَ وَعِنْدَهُ وَزَّانٌ يَزِنُ بِالْأَجْرِ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «زِنْ فَأَرْجِحْ»
✧ Makhrafah al-'Abdi and I brought cloth from Hajar, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and bargained with us for a pair of trousers. With him was a weigher who weighed for a fee. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: 'Weigh and give more.'

«مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَلْيَزْرَعْهَا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَنْ يَزْرَعَهَا فَلْيَمْنَحْهَا أَخَاهُ وَلَا يُؤَاجِرْهَا إِيَّاهُ»
✧ Whoever has land, let him cultivate it. If he cannot cultivate it, let him grant it to his brother and not lease it to him.
يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ انْزِلْ فِي دَارِكَ بِمَكَّةَ قَالَ «وَهَلْ تَرَكَ لَنَا عَقِيلٌ مِنْ رِبَاعٍ أَوْ دُورٍ» وَكَانَ عَقِيلٌ وَرِثَ أَبَا طَالِبٍ هُوَ وَطَالِبٌ وَلَمْ يَرِثْهُ جَعْفَرٌ وَلَا عَلِيٌّ شَيْئًا لِأَنَّهُمَا كَانَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ وَكَانَ عَقِيلٌ وَطَالِبٌ كَافِرَيْنِ فَكَانَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ مِنْ أَجْلِ ذَلِكَ يَقُولُ لَا يَرِثُ الْمُؤْمِنُ الْكَافِرَ
✧ O Messenger of Allah, stay in your house in Makkah. He said: 'And has 'Aqil left us any dwellings or houses?' 'Aqil and Talib inherited Abu Talib, but Ja'far and 'Ali did not inherit anything because they were Muslims, while 'Aqil and Talib were disbelievers. For that reason, 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ used to say: 'A believer does not inherit from a disbeliever.'
«أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ احْتَجَمَ وَأَعْطَى الْحَجَّامَ أَجْرَهُ وَاسْتَعَطَ»
✧ The Prophet ﷺ had cupping done and gave the cupper his wage, and he used a nasal medicine.
أَنَّ «النَّبِيَّ ﷺ احْتَجَمَ وَأَعْطَى الْحَجَّامَ أَجْرَهُ»
✧ The Prophet ﷺ underwent cupping and gave the cupper his wage.
«كَسْبُ الْحَجَّامِ خَبِيثٌ وَثَمَنُ الْكَلْبِ خَبِيثٌ وَمَهْرُ الْبَغِيِّ خَبِيثٌ»
✧ The earnings of the cupper are impure, the price of a dog is impure, and the dower of an adulteress is impure.
«كَسْبُ الْحَجَّامِ خَبِيثٌ وَمَهْرُ الْبَغِيِّ خَبِيثٌ وَثَمَنُ الْكَلْبِ خَبِيثٌ»
✧ The earnings of the cupper are impure, the dower of an adulteress is impure, and the price of a dog is impure.
أَنَّ أَبَاهُ اسْتَأْذَنَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي خَرَاجِ الْحَجَّامِ فَأَبَى أَنْ يَأْذَنَ لَهُ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ بِهِ حَتَّى قَالَ «أَطْعِمْهُ رَقِيقَكَ وَأَعْلِفْهُ نَاضِحَكَ»
✧ His father asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission regarding the cupper's tax, but he refused to grant him permission, and he persisted until he said: "Feed it to your slaves and give it as fodder to your water-carrying camel."
«نَهَى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ ضِرَابِ الْجَمَلِ»
✧ The Prophet ﷺ forbade the stud fee of a stallion camel.
نَهَى عَنْ عَسْبِ الْفَحْلِ»
✧ He forbade the stud fee of a male animal.
«نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ ثَمَنِ الْكَلْبِ وَمَهْرِ الْبَغِيِّ وَحُلْوَانِ الْكَاهِنِ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the price of a dog, the dower of an adulteress, and the payment of a soothsayer.
نَهَى عَنْ كَسْبِ الْإِمَاءِ»
✧ He forbade the earnings of slave women.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the earnings of slave women for fear that they would engage in prostitution.
