14. Excellence in Character

  1. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 260Hasan

    عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لاَ تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ حَتَّى تُسْلِمُوا وَلاَ تُسْلِمُوا حَتَّى تَحَابُّوا وَأَفْشُوا السَّلاَمَ تَحَابُّوا وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْبُغْضَةَ فَإِنَّهَا هِيَ الْحَالِقَةُ لاَ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ تَحْلِقُ الشَّعْرَ وَلَكِنْ تَحْلِقُ الدِّينَ

    Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, "By the One in Whose Hand my soul is, you will not enter Paradise until you submit to Islam. And, you will not submit to Islam until you love one another. Extend the greeting to one another and you will love one another. Beware of hatred, for it is the razor. I do not tell you that it shaves the hair, but it shaves away the deen."

    عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ رُوحَ الْمُؤْمِنَيْنِ لَيَلْتَقِيَانِ فِي مَسِيرَةِ يَوْمٍ وَمَا رَأَى أَحَدُهُمَا صَاحِبَهُ

    ✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, he said: The souls of two believers meet in a day’s journey even though neither of them has seen his companion.

    النِّعَمُ تُكْفَرُ وَالرَّحِمُ تُقْطَعُ وَلَمْ نَرَ مِثْلَ تَقَارُبِ الْقُلُوبِ

    The favors are not recognized, (the familial ties of) the womb are severed, and we have not seen the like of the closeness of the hearts.

  4. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 263Weak

    كُنَّا نَتَحَدَّثُ إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَا يُرْفَعُ مِنَ النَّاسِ الأُلْفَةُ

    'Umayr ibn Ishaq said, "We used to say that the first thing to be removed from people would be friendship."

  5. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 264Sahih

    أَتَى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى بَعْضِ نِسَائِهِ وَمَعَهُنَّ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَنْجَشَةُ رُوَيْدًا سَوْقَكَ بِالْقَوَارِيرِ

    Anas ibn Malik said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon a group of women which included Umm Sulaym. He said, 'Anjasha! Be gentle when you drive the glass vessels!"

  6. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 265Sahih

    قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّكَ تُدَاعِبُنَا؟ قَالَ إِنِّي لاَ أَقُولُ إِلا حَقًّا

    Abu Hurayra reported that the people said, "Messenger of Allah, you joke with us!" He replied, "But I only speak the truth."

  7. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 266Sahih

    كَانَ أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يَتَبَادَحُونَ بِالْبِطِّيخِ فَإِذَا كَانَتِ الْحَقَائِقُ كَانُوا هُمُ الرِّجَالَ

    Bakr ibn 'Abdullah reported that the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to throw melons at one another. He said, "If these were real, they would be men."

  8. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 267Weak

    مَزَحَتْ عَائِشَةُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ أُمُّهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بَعْضُ دُعَابَاتِ هَذَا الْحَيِّ مِنْ كِنَانَةَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَلْ بَعْضُ مَزْحِنَا هَذَا الْحَيُّ

    Ibn Abi Mulayka said, "'A'isha was joking with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Her slave girl said, 'Messenger of Allah, some of the women who make jokes in this quarter are from Kinana!' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Rather some of our jokesters in this quarter.'"

  9. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 268Sahih

    جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يَسْتَحْمِلُهُ فَقَالَ أَنَا حَامِلُكَ عَلَى وَلَدِ نَاقَةٍ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَمَا أَصْنَعُ بِوَلَدِ نَاقَةٍ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهَلْ تَلِدُ الإِبِلَ إِلاَّ النُّوقُ

    Anas ibn Malik said, "A man came to the Prophet ﷺ to ask him for a mount. He said, 'I will give you a she-camel's foal to ride.' He exclaimed, 'Messenger of Allah, what can I do with a she-camel's foal?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Are camels born from anything other than she-camels?'"

  10. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 269Sahih

    كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَيُخَالِطُنَا حَتَّى يَقُولَ لأَخٍ لِي صَغِيرٍ يَا أَبَا عُمَيْرٍ مَا فَعَلَ النُّغَيْرُ؟

    Anas ibn Malik said, "The Prophet ﷺ used to mix with us to the extent of asking a younger brother of mine, 'Abu 'Umayr! What has happened to the little sparrow?'"

  11. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 270aNo grade recorded

    أَخَذَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِيَدِ الْحَسَنِ أَوِ الْحُسَيْنِ ؓ ثُمَّ وَضَعَ قَدَمَيْهِ عَلَى قَدَمَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ تَرَقَّ

    Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took al-Hasan or al-Husayn by the hand and then put his feet on top of his own feet and said, "Climb up."

  12. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 270bNo grade recorded

    عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ مَا مِنْ شَىْءٍ أَثْقَلُ فِي الْمِيزَانِ مِنْ حُسْنِ الْخُلُقِ

    ✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, he said: Nothing is heavier in the balance than good character.

  13. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 271Sahih

    لَمْ يَكُنِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَاحِشًا وَلاَ مُتَفَحِّشًا وَكَانَ يَقُولُ خِيَارُكُمْ أَحَاسِنُكُمْ أَخْلاَقًا

    'Abdullah ibn 'Amr said, "The Prophet ﷺ was neither coarse nor loud. He used to say, "The best of you is the one who has the best character."

  14. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 272Sahih

    أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِأَحَبِّكُمْ إِلَيَّ وَأَقْرَبِكُمْ مِنِّي مَجْلِسًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ؟ فَسَكَتَ الْقَوْمُ فَأَعَادَهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثًا قَالَ الْقَوْمُ نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ أَحْسَنُكُمْ خُلُقًا

    ✧ That he heard the Prophet ﷺ say: Shall I tell you who among you is most beloved to me and closest to me in sitting on the Day of Resurrection? The people fell silent, so he repeated it two or three times. The people said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: The best of you in character.

  15. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 273Sahih

    أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ لِأُتَمِّمَ صَالِحَ الأَخْلاقِ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I was only sent to perfect righteous character.

  16. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 274Sahih

    مَا خُيِّرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ أَمْرَيْنِ إِلاَّ اخْتَارَ أَيْسَرَهُمَا مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ إِثْمًا فَإِذَا كَانَ إِثْمًا كَانَ أَبْعَدَ النَّاسِ مِنْهُ وَمَا انْتَقَمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِنَفْسِهِ إِلاَّ أَنْ تُنْتَهَكَ حُرْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالَى فَيَنْتَقِمُ لِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِهَا

    'A'isha said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was never given a choice between two things but that he chose the easier of the two as long as it was not a wrong action. If it was a wrong action, then he was the last person to do it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never took revenge on his own behalf. But when the respect of Allah Almighty was violated, he would take revenge on behalf of Allah Almighty."

    إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَسَمَ بَيْنَكُمْ أَخْلاَقَكُمْ كَمَا قَسَمَ بَيْنَكُمْ أَرْزَاقَكُمْ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى يُعْطِي الْمَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ وَمَنْ لاَ يُحِبُّ وَلاَ يُعْطِي الإِيمَانَ إِلاَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّ فَمَنْ ضَنَّ بِالْمَالِ أَنْ يُنْفِقَهُ وَخَافَ الْعَدُوَّ أَنْ يُجَاهِدَهُ وَهَابَ اللَّيْلَ أَنْ يُكَابِدَهُ فَلْيُكْثِرْ مِنْ قَوْلِ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَسُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

    'Abdullah said, "Allah Almighty allotted character between you as He divided provision between you. Allah Almighty bestows wealth on those He loves and those He does not love. He only bestows faith upon those who He loves. Whoever is stingy about spending his wealth, fears to fight the enemy, and is terrified of enduring the night should frequently repeat. 'There is no god worthy of worship but Allah, Glory be to Allah, All praises are due to Allah, and Allah is the greatest."

  18. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 276Sahih

    عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لَيْسَ الْغِنَى عَنْ كَثْرَةِ الْعَرَضِ وَلَكِنَّ الْغِنَى غِنَى النَّفْسِ

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ said, "Wealth is not from an abundance of goods, but wealth is the wealth of the soul."

  19. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 277Sahih

    خَدَمْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَشْرَ سِنِينَ فَمَا قَالَ لِي أُفٍّ قَطُّ وَمَا قَالَ لِي لِشَيْءٍ لَمْ أَفْعَلْهُ أَلاَ كُنْتَ فَعَلْتَهُ؟ وَلاَ لِشَيْءٍ فَعَلْتُهُ لِمَ فَعَلْتَهُ؟

    Anas said, "I served the Prophet ﷺ for ten years. He never said 'uff' to me and he never questioned me about anything I had not done, asking, 'Why didn't you do it?' or questioned me about something I had done, asking 'Why did you do that?'"

  20. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 278Hasan

    كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ رَحِيمًا وَكَانَ لاَ يَأْتِيهِ أَحَدٌ إِلاَّ وَعَدَهُ وَأَنْجَزَ لَهُ إِنْ كَانَ عِنْدَهُ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ وَجَاءَهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ فَأَخَذَ بِثَوْبِهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا بَقِيَ مِنْ حَاجَتِي يَسِيرَةٌ وَأَخَافُ أَنْسَاهَا فَقَامَ مَعَهُ حَتَّى فَرَغَ مِنْ حَاجَتِهِ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ فَصَلَّى

    Anas ibn Malik said, "The Prophet ﷺ was merciful. No one came to him but that he promised him something and carried out that promise, if he had anything to give. The iqama for the prayer had been given when a bedouin came, took hold of his garment, and stated, 'I am still not satisfied and I'm afraid of forgetting'. The Prophet went with him until the man had received what he wanted then he returned and prayed."

  21. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 279Sahih

    قَالَ مَا سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لا

    Jabir said, "The Prophet ﷺ was never asked for anything to which he said, 'No.'"

  22. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 280Sahih

    مَا رَأَيْتُ امْرَأَتَيْنِ أَجْوَدَ مِنْ عَائِشَةَ وَأَسْمَاءَ وَجُودُهُمَا مُخْتَلِفٌ أَمَّا عَائِشَةُ فَكَانَتْ تَجْمَعُ الشَّيْءَ إِلَى الشَّيْءِ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ اجْتَمَعَ عِنْدَهَا قَسَمَتْ وَأَمَّا أَسْمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ لاَ تُمْسِكُ شَيْئًا لِغَدٍ

    'Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr said, "I have never seen two women more generous than 'A'isha and Asma'. Their generosity was different. 'A'isha used to gather things and after they had been collected together, she would share them out. Asma' would not keep anything for the next day."

  23. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 281Sahih

    قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لاَ يَجْتَمِعُ غُبَارٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَدُخَانُ جَهَنَّمَ فِي جَوْفِ عَبْدٍ أَبَدًا وَلاَ يَجْتَمِعُ الشُّحُّ وَالإِيمَانُ فِي قَلْبِ عَبْدٍ أَبَدًا

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Dust in the way of Allah and the smoke of Hell will never combine in the belly of a servant, and stinginess and faith will never combine in the heart of a servant."

  24. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 282Weak

    عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ خَصْلَتَانِ لاَ يَجْتَمِعَانِ فِي مُؤْمِنٍ الْبُخْلُ وَسُوءُ الْخُلُقِ

    Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Two qualities are not found together in a believer: miserliness and ill-temper."

    كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَذَكَرُوا رَجُلاً فَذَكَرُوا مِنْ خُلُقِهِ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتُمْ لَوْ قَطَعْتُمْ رَأْسَهُ أَكُنْتُمْ تَسْتَطِيعُونَ أَنْ تُعِيدُوهُ؟ قَالُوا لاَ قَالَ فَيَدُهُ؟ قَالُوا لاَ قَالَ فَرِجْلُهُ؟ قَالُوا لاَ قَالَ فَإِنَّكُمْ لاَ تَسْتَطِيعُونَ أَنْ تُغَيِّرُوا خُلُقَهُ حَتَّى تُغَيِّرُوا خَلْقَهُ إِنَّ النُّطْفَةَ لَتَسْتَقِرُّ فِي الرَّحِمِ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ تَنْحَدِرُ دَمًا ثُمَّ تَكُونُ عَلَقَةً ثُمَّ تَكُونُ مُضْغَةً ثُمَّ يَبْعَثُ اللَّهُ مَلَكًا فَيُكْتَبُ رِزْقَهُ وَخُلُقَهُ وَشَقِيًّا أَوْ سَعِيدًا

    "We used to sit with 'Abdullah and they mentioned a man together with aspects of his character. 'Abdullah said, 'What would you think if you cut off his head? Would you be able to put it back on again?' 'No,' they replied. He said, 'And his hand?' 'No,' they said. 'And his foot?' they said. 'No,' he said. He said, 'You cannot change his character until you change his physical form. The drop remains in the womb for forty nights and then the blood congeals and then it becomes a blood clot and then a lump of flesh and then Allah sends an angel and he records his provision, his character, and whether he will be happy or miserable (in the Next World).'"

  26. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 284Sahih

    قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُدْرِكُ بِحُسْنِ خُلُقِهِ دَرَجَةَ الْقَائِمِ بِاللَّيْلِ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A man reaches by his good character the rank of one who stands in prayer at night."

  27. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 285Sahih

    سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ يَقُولُ خَيْرُكُمْ إِسْلاَمًا أَحَاسِنُكُمْ أَخْلاَقًا إِذَا فَقِهُوا

    ✧ I heard Abu al-Qasim ﷺ say, "The best of you in Islam are the best of you in character, when they acquire understanding."

  28. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 286Sahih

    حَدَّثَنِي ثَابِتُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا أَجَلَّ إِذَا جَلَسَ مَعَ الْقَوْمِ وَلاَ أَفْكَهَ فِي بَيْتِهِ مِنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ

    ✧ Thabit b. Ubayd narrated to me, saying, "I never saw anyone more dignified when sitting with people, nor more cheerful in his house, than Zayd b. Thabit."

  29. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 287Hasan

    سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَيُّ الأَدْيَانِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ؟ قَالَ الْحَنِيفِيَّةُ السَّمْحَةُ

    Ibn 'Abbas said, "The Prophet ﷺ was asked, 'Which religion does Allah Almighty love the most?' He replied, 'The simple Hanifiyya one.'"

  30. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 288No grade recorded

    أَرْبَعُ خِلاَلٍ إِذَا أُعْطِيتَهُنَّ فَلاَ يَضُرُّكَ مَا عُزِلَ عَنْكَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا حُسْنُ خَلِيقَةٍ وَعَفَافُ طُعْمَةٍ وَصِدْقُ حَدِيثٍ وَحِفْظُ أَمَانَةٍ

    'Abdullah ibn 'Amr said, "There are four qualities such that if you were to be given them, you will not be harmed even if the world were to be taken away from you. They are: good character, restraint in food, truthful speech, and upholding a trust."

  31. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 289Hasan

    قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: «تَدْرُونَ مَا أَكْثَرُ مَا يُدْخِلُ النَّارَ؟» قَالُوا: اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ. قَالَ: «الأَجْوَفَانِ: الْفَرْجُ وَالْفَمُ. وَأَكْثَرُ مَا يُدْخِلُ الْجَنَّةَ؟ تَقْوَى اللهِ وَحُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ».

    The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you know what most often causes people to enter the Fire?" They said, "Allah ﷻ and His Messenger know best." He said, "The two hollow organs: the private parts and the mouth. And what most often causes people to enter Paradise? Fear of Allah ﷻ and good character."

    قَامَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ لَيْلَةً يُصَلِّي فَجَعَلَ يَبْكِي وَيَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ أَحْسَنْتَ خَلْقِي فَحَسِّنْ خُلُقِي حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ قُلْتُ يَا أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ مَا كَانَ دُعَاؤُكَ مُنْذُ اللَّيْلَةِ إِلاَّ فِي حُسْنِ الْخُلُقِ؟ فَقَالَ يَا أُمَّ الدَّرْدَاءِ إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ الْمُسْلِمَ يَحْسُنُ خُلُقُهُ حَتَّى يُدْخِلَهُ حُسْنُ خُلُقِهِ الْجَنَّةَ وَيَسِيءُ خُلُقُهُ حَتَّى يُدْخِلَهُ سُوءُ خُلُقِهِ النَّارَ وَالْعَبْدُ الْمُسْلِمُ يُغْفَرُ لَهُ وَهُوَ نَائِمٌ قُلْتُ يَا أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ كَيْفَ يُغْفَرُ لَهُ وَهُوَ نَائِمٌ؟ قَالَ يَقُومُ أَخُوهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَيَجْتَهِدُ فَيَدْعُو اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَيَسْتَجِيبُ لَهُ وَيَدْعُو لأَخِيهِ فَيَسْتَجِيبُ لَهُ فِيهِ

    Umm al-Darda said: Abu al-Darda stood up in the night to pray. He was weeping and said, 'O Allah! You made my physical form good, so make my character good!' until morning. I said, 'O Abu al-Darda, your only supplication for the entire night was for good character!' He replied, 'Umm al-Darda', the Muslim perfects his character until good character enters him into Paradise; and taints his character until his bad character enter him into Hellfire. The Muslim is forgiven while he is asleep.' I asked, 'Abu al-Darda, how can be forgiven while he is asleep?' He said, 'His brother arises in the night, performs the night prayer, and supplicates to Allah Almighty and is answered. He supplicates for his Muslim brother and his supplication is answered.'

  33. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 291Sahih

    كُنْتُ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَجَاءَتِ الأَعْرَابُ نَاسٌ كَثِيرٌ مِنْ هَاهُنَا وَهَاهُنَا فَسَكَتَ النَّاسُ لاَ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ غَيْرَهُمْ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَعَلَيْنَا حَرَجٌ فِي كَذَا وَكَذَا؟ فِي أَشْيَاءَ مِنْ أُمُورِ النَّاسِ لاَ بَأْسَ بِهَا فَقَالَ يَا عِبَادَ اللهِ وَضَعَ اللَّهُ الْحَرَجَ إِلاَّ امْرَءًا اقْتَرَضَ امْرَءًا ظُلْمًا فَذَاكَ الَّذِي حَرِجَ وَهَلَكَ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنَتَدَاوَى؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ يَا عِبَادَ اللهِ تَدَاوَوْا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَمْ يَضَعْ دَاءً إِلاَّ وَضَعَ لَهُ شِفَاءً غَيْرَ دَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ قَالُوا وَمَا هِيَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ الْهَرَمُ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا خَيْرُ مَا أُعْطِيَ الإِنْسَانُ؟ قَالَ خُلُقٌ حَسَنٌ

    Usama ibn Sharik said, "I was with the Prophet ﷺ when some bedouins came. There were many people on all sides. The people were silent and no one spoke except them. They said, 'Messenger of Allah! We experience difficulty in such-and-such and such-and-such' and it was in things which are not harmful to people. He said, 'Servants of Allah! Allah has removed difficulty except in a case where a man slanders someone unjustly - that is the one who is in difficulty and destroyed.' They said, 'Messenger of Allah, can we make use of medical treatment?' 'Yes, servants of Allah,' he replied, 'you can make use of medical treatment. Allah Almighty did not create an illness but that He made a cure for it - except for one disease.' They asked, 'And what is that, Messenger of Allah?' 'Old age,' he replied. They said, 'Messenger of Allah, what is the best thing that a man can be given?' He replied, 'Good character'."

  34. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 292Sahih

    كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَجْوَدَ النَّاسِ بِالْخَيْرِ وَكَانَ أَجْوَدَ مَا يَكُونُ فِي رَمَضَانَ حِينَ يَلْقَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ ﷺ وَكَانَ جِبْرِيلُ يَلْقَاهُ فِي كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ يَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْقُرْآنَ فَإِذَا لَقِيَهُ جِبْرِيلُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَجْوَدَ بِالْخَيْرِ مِنَ الرِّيحِ الْمُرْسَلَةِ

    Ibn 'Abbas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the most generous of people in giving charity. He was even more generous in Ramadan when Jibril ﷺ used to meet him. Every night of Ramadan, Jibril used to come to him and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would read the Qur'an to him. When Jibril came to him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was more generous in giving charity than the blowing wind."

  35. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 293Sahih

    قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حُوسِبَ رَجُلٌ مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ فَلَمْ يُوجَدْ لَهُ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ إِلاَّ أَنَّهُ كَانَ رَجُلاً يُخَالِطُ النَّاسَ وَكَانَ مُوسِرًا فَكَانَ يَأْمُرُ غِلْمَانَهُ أَنْ يَتَجَاوَزُوا عَنِ الْمُعْسِرِ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ مِنْهُ فَتَجَاوَزَ عَنْهُ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A man from among those before you was brought to account, and no good was found for him except that he was a man who mixed with people and was wealthy, and he used to order his servants to overlook the one in difficulty. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said, 'We are more entitled to that than him, so overlook him.'"

  36. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 294Hasan

    سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: مَا أَكْثَرُ مَا يُدْخِلُ الْجَنَّةَ؟ قَالَ: «تَقْوَى اللهِ وَحُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ» قَالَ: وَمَا أَكْثَرُ مَا يُدْخِلُ النَّارَ؟ قَالَ: «الأَجْوَفَانِ الْفَمُ وَالْفَرْجُ»۔

    The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, “What is the thing that most frequently admits people into Paradise?” He said, “God-consciousness (taqwa) and good character.” He was then asked, “And what is the thing that most frequently admits people into the Fire?” He said, “The two hollow ones: the mouth and the private parts.”

  37. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 295Sahih

    أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْبِرِّ وَالإِثْمِ؟ قَالَ الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ وَالإِثْمُ مَا حَكَّ فِي نَفْسِكَ وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ

    ✧ He asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about righteousness and sin. He said, "Righteousness is good character, and sin is what wavers in your soul and you dislike that people should come to know of it."

  38. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 296Sahih

    قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ سَيِّدُكُمْ يَا بَنِي سَلِمَةَ؟ قُلْنَا جُدُّ بْنُ قَيْسٍ عَلَى أَنَّا نُبَخِّلُهُ قَالَ وَأَيُّ دَاءٍ أَدْوَى مِنَ الْبُخْلِ؟ بَلْ سَيِّدُكُمْ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْجَمُوحِ وَكَانَ عَمْرٌو عَلَى أَصْنَامِهِمْ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَكَانَ يُولِمُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا تَزَوَّجَ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who is your chief, O Banu Salima?" We said, "Judd b. Qays, although we consider him stingy." He said, "And what disease is worse than stinginess? Rather, your chief is Amr b. al-Jamuh." Amr was in charge of their idols in the Jahiliyya, and he used to hold the wedding feast for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he married.

  39. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 297Sahih

    كَتَبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ إِلَى الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ أَنِ اكْتُبْ إِلَيَّ بِشَيْءٍ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ الْمُغِيرَةُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَنْهَى عَنْ قِيلَ وَقَالَ وَإِضَاعَةِ الْمَالِ وَكَثْرَةِ السُّؤَالِ وَعَنْ مَنْعٍ وَهَاتِ وَعُقُوقِ الأُمَّهَاتِ وَعَنْ وَأْدِ الْبَنَاتِ

    Warrad, the scribe of al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba, said, "Mu'awiya wrote to al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba, saying, 'Write down for me something which you heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.' Al-Mughira wrote to him, ' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to forbid gossip, wasting money, asking too many questions, refusing to give, disobedience to parents, and burying daughters alive."

  40. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 298Sahih

    مَا سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ شَيْءٍ قَطُّ فَقَالَ لا

    Jabir said, "The Prophet ﷺ was never asked for anything to which he said, 'No,'"

  41. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 299Sahih

    بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ آخُذَ عَلَيَّ ثِيَابِي وَسِلاَحِي ثُمَّ آتِيهِ فَفَعَلْتُ فَأَتَيْتُهُ وَهُوَ يَتَوَضَّأُ فَصَعَّدَ إِلَيَّ الْبَصَرَ ثُمَّ طَأْطَأَ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا عَمْرُو إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَبْعَثَكَ عَلَى جَيْشٍ فَيُغْنِمُكَ اللَّهُ وَأَرْغَبُ لَكَ رَغْبَةً مِنَ الْمَالِ صَالِحَةً قُلْتُ إِنِّي لَمْ أُسْلِمْ رَغْبَةً فِي الْمَالِ إِنَّمَا أَسْلَمْتُ رَغْبَةً فِي الإِسْلاَمِ فَأَكُونُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا عَمْرُو نِعْمَ الْمَالُ الصَّالِحِ لِلْمَرْءِ الصَّالِحِ

    'Amr ibn al-'As said, "The Prophet ﷺ sent for me. He commanded me to put on my clothes and weapons and come to him. I did that and came to him while he was doing wudu'. He looked at me and then lowered his eyes. He then said, ''Amr, I want to put you in charge of an army and Allah will give you booty. I will give you a correct portion of the spoils.' I said, 'I did not become Muslim out of the desire for property. I became Muslim out of the desire for Islam and so that I would be with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.' He said, ''Amr! Sound (legitimately acquired) wealth is very excellent for a righteous man!'"

  42. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 300Hasan

    عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ أَصْبَحَ آمِنًا فِي سِرْبِهِ مُعَافًى فِي جَسَدِهِ عِنْدَهُ طَعَامُ يَوْمِهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا حِيزَتْ لَهُ الدُّنْيَا

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever wakes up secure in his dwelling, healthy in his body, and has his day's food, it is as if the whole world has been gathered for him."

  43. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 301Sahih

    أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَعَلَيْهِ أَثَرُ غُسْلٍ وَهُوَ طَيِّبُ النَّفْسِ فَظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ أَلَمَّ بِأَهْلِهِ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ نَرَاكَ طَيِّبَ النَّفْسِ؟ قَالَ أَجَلْ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ثُمَّ ذُكِرَ الْغِنَى فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّهُ لاَ بَأْسَ بِالْغِنَى لِمَنِ اتَّقَى وَالصِّحَّةُ لِمَنِ اتَّقَى خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْغِنَى وَطِيبُ النَّفْسِ مِنَ النِّعَمِ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them with traces of a bath, and he was in good spirits. We thought he had been with his wife, so we said, "O Messenger of Allah, we see you in good spirits." He said, "Yes, and praise be to Allah." Then wealth was mentioned, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no harm in wealth for one who is God-fearing, and health for one who is God-fearing is better than wealth, and good spirits are among the blessings."

  44. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 302Sahih

    أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْبِرِّ وَالإِثْمِ؟ فَقَالَ الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ وَالإِثْمُ مَا حَكَّ فِي نَفْسِكَ وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ

    عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَحْسَنَ النَّاسِ وَأَجْوَدَ النَّاسِ وَأَشْجَعَ النَّاسِ وَلَقَدْ فَزِعَ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَانْطَلَقَ النَّاسُ قِبَلَ الصَّوْتِ فَاسْتَقْبَلَهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَدْ سَبَقَ النَّاسَ إِلَى الصَّوْتِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ لَنْ تُرَاعُوا لَنْ تُرَاعُوا وَهُوَ عَلَى فَرَسٍ لأَبِي طَلْحَةَ عُرْيٍ مَا عَلَيْهِ سَرْجٌ وَفِي عُنُقِهِ السَّيْفُ فَقَالَ لَقَدْ وَجَدْتُهُ بَحْرًا أَوْ إِنَّهُ لَبَحْرٌ

    ✧ Anas said, "The Prophet ﷺ was the best of people, the most generous of people, and the bravest of people. The people of Madinah were frightened one night, and the people went toward the sound. The Prophet ﷺ met them, having preceded the people to the sound, saying, 'Do not be alarmed, do not be alarmed.' He was on a bareback horse of Abu Talha, with no saddle, and a sword around his neck. He said, 'I found it to be a sea,' or 'it is indeed a sea.'"

  46. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 304Hasan

    قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كُلُّ مَعْرُوفٍ صَدَقَةٌ إِنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ بِوَجْهٍ طَلْقٍ وَأَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ أَخِيكَ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Every act of kindness is charity. Among acts of kindness is that you meet your brother with a cheerful face, and that you pour from your bucket into your brother's vessel."

  47. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 305Sahih

    عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَيُّ الأَعْمَالِ خَيْرٌ؟ قَالَ إِيمَانٌ بِاللَّهِ وَجِهَادٌ فِي سَبِيلِهِ قَالَ فَأَيُّ الرِّقَابِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ أَغْلاَهَا ثَمَنًا وَأَنْفَسُهَا عِنْدَ أَهْلِهَا قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ أَسْتَطِعْ بَعْضَ الْعَمَلِ؟ قَالَ تُعِينُ ضَائِعًا أَوْ تَصْنَعُ لأَخْرَقَ قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ ضَعُفْتُ؟ قَالَ تَدَعُ النَّاسَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ تَصَدَّقَهَا عَلَى نَفْسِكَ

    ✧ From Abu Dharr ؓ: The Prophet ﷺ was asked, "Which deeds are best?" He said, "Faith in Allah and jihad in His path." He said, "Then which slaves are most excellent?" He said, "Those with the highest price and most precious to their owners." He said, "What do you think if I cannot do some of the work?" He said, "You help someone who is lost or you work for someone unskilled." He said, "What do you think if I am too weak?" He said, "You refrain from harming people, for it is a charity you give to yourself."

  48. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 306Sahih

    عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ صَدَقَةٌ قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ؟ قَالَ فَلْيَعْمَلْ فَلْيَنْفَعْ نَفْسَهُ وَلْيَتَصَدَّقْ قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَوْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ لِيُعِنْ ذَا الْحَاجَةِ الْمَلْهُوفَ قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَوْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ فَلْيَأْمُرْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَوْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ يُمْسِكْ عَنِ الشَّرِّ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ

    ✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "Every Muslim owes charity." He said, "What do you think if he finds nothing?" He said, "Then let him work, benefit himself, and give charity." He said, "What do you think if he cannot or does not do it?" He said, "Then let him help one in need who is distressed." He said, "What do you think if he cannot or does not do it?" He said, "Then let him enjoin what is good." He said, "What do you think if he cannot or does not do it?" He said, "Let him refrain from evil, for it is charity for him."

  49. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 307Weak

    أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَدْعُوَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الصِّحَّةَ وَالْعِفَّةَ وَالأَمَانَةَ وَحُسْنَ الْخُلُقِ وَالرِّضَا بِالْقَدَرِ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to frequently supplicate: "O Allah, I ask You for health, chastity, trustworthiness, good character, and contentment with decree."

  50. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 308Weak

    دَخَلْنَا عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَقُلْنَا يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَا كَانَ خُلُقُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَتْ كَانَ خُلُقُهُ الْقُرْآنَ تَقْرَؤُونَ سُورَةَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ؟ قَالَتِ اقْرَأْ {قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ} قَالَ يَزِيدُ فَقَرَأْتُ {قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ} إِلَى {لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ} قَالَتْ هَكَذَا كَانَ خُلُقُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

    Yazid ibn Yabnus said, "We went to 'A'isha and said, 'Umm al-Mu'minin, what was the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ like?' She replied, 'His character was the Qur'an. Can you recite the sura entitled "The Believers"?' She said, 'Recite: "It is the believers who are successful: those who are humble in their prayer; those who turn away from worthless talk; those who actively pay zakat; those who guard their private parts." (23:1-5)' She said, 'That was the character of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.'"
