حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ النَّزَّالَ بْنَ سَبْرَةَ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ، يَقُولُ:

سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا يَقْرَأُ آيَةً سَمِعْتُ خِلَافَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، قَالَ: فَأَخَذْتُ بِيَدِهِ فَأَتَيْتُ بِهِ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: كِلَاكُمَا مُحْسِنٌ، قَالَ شُعْبَةُ: وَأَظُنُّهُ قَالَ: لَا تَخْتَلِفُوا، فَإِنَّ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمُ اخْتَلَفُوا فِيهِ فَهَلَكُوا

Translation

✧ I heard a man reciting a verse differently from what I had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: So I took him by the hand and brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, 'Both of you are good.' Shu'ba said: And I think he said, 'Do not differ, for those before you differed about it and were destroyed.'
