أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْخَطِيبُ بِالْأَهْوَازِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَامِرُ بْنُ مُدْرِكٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ زِرٍّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

أَقْرَأَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ سُورَةَ الرَّحْمَنِ فَخَرَجْتُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ عَشِيَّةً فَجَلَسَ إِلَيَّ رَهْطٌ فَقُلْتُ لِرَجُلٍ اقْرَأْ عَلَيَّ فَإِذَا هُوَ يَقْرَأُ أَحْرُفًا لَا أَقْرَؤُهَا فَقُلْتُ مَنْ أَقْرَأَكَ؟ فَقَالَ أَقْرَأَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَانْطَلَقْنَا حَتَّى وَقَفْنَا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ اخْتَلَفْنَا فِي قِرَاءَتِنَا فَإِذَا وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِيهِ تَغَيُّرٌ وَوَجَدَ فِي نَفْسِهِ حِينَ ذَكَرْتُ الِاخْتِلَافَ فَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ بِالِاخْتِلَافِ» فَأَمَرَ عَلِيًّا فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَنْ يَقْرَأَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنْكُمْ كَمَا عُلِّمَ فَإِنَّمَا أَهْلَكَ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمُ الِاخْتِلَافُ قَالَ فَانْطَلَقْنَا وَكُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنَّا يَقْرَأُ حَرْفًا لَا يَقْرَأُ صَاحِبُهُ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me Surah al-Rahman. I went out to the mosque in the evening, and a group of people sat with me. I said to a man, 'Recite to me,' and he recited in ways that I did not recite. I said, 'Who taught you?' He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me.' So we went until we stood before the Prophet ﷺ. I said, 'We have differed in our recitation.' The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ showed a change, and he felt something within himself when I mentioned the difference. He said, 'Those before you were destroyed only by differing.' Then he commanded 'Ali, who said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands that each man among you recite as he has been taught, for those before you were destroyed only by differing.' He said, 'So we left, each man of us reciting a way that his companion did not recite.'

    رواه عاصم بن أبي النجود عن زر بن حبيش عن عبد الله واختلف عن عاصم فرواه سليمان الأعمش وأبو خالد الدالاني وشيبان النحوي وإسرائيل بن يونس وأبو بكر بن عياش وسلام أبو المنذر وحماد بن سلمة وأبان بن يزيد العطار وأبو عوانة وعمرو بن أبي قيس فاتفقوا عن عاصم عن زر عن عبد الله وخالفهم همام بن يحيى فرواه عن عاصم عن أبي وائل عن عبد الله والقول من قال عن زر وهو الصواب

    machine translationʿĀṣim b. Abī al-Najūd narrated it from Zirr b. Ḥubaysh from ʿAbdullāh. There was disagreement about ʿĀṣim: Sulaymān al-Aʿmash, Abū Khālid al-Dālānī, Shaybān al-Naḥwī, Isrāʾīl b. Yūnus, Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh, Sallām Abū al-Mundhir, Ḥammād b. Salamah, Abān b. Yazīd al-ʿAṭṭār, Abū ʿAwānah and ʿAmr b. Abī Qays all agreed in narrating it from ʿĀṣim from Zirr from ʿAbdullāh. Hammām b. Yaḥyā differed from them, narrating it from ʿĀṣim from Abū Wāʾil from ʿAbdullāh. The correct view is that of the one who said "from Zirr".
