✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ taught me to recite a sūrah of the thirty from the family of Ḥā Mīm—meaning al-Aḥqāf. When a sūrah was more than thirty verses, it was called “the thirty.” I went to the mosque, and there was a man reciting it differently from how he taught me. I said: “Who taught you?” He said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ.” I said to another: “Recite it,” and he recited it differently from my recitation and that of my companion. I took them both to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of God, these two disagree with me in recitation.” He became angry and his face changed, and he said: “Those before you were destroyed only by disagreement.” Zirr said: “There was a man with him, and the man said: ‘The Messenger of God ﷺ commands you that each of you recite as he was taught, for those before you were destroyed only by disagreement.’” ʿAbd Allāh said: “I do not know whether the Messenger of God ﷺ confided something to him or whether he knew what was in the Messenger of God’s ﷺ mind.” The man was ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib.
