✧ We used to greet the Prophet ﷺ and he would respond to us, meaning during the prayer. When we came from the land of Abyssinia, I greeted him and he did not respond to me. I was seized by anxiety over what was far and near. I sat until he finished the prayer, then I said to him: You used to respond to us. He said: “Allah brings about whatever He wills, and He has brought about in His command a decree that you should not speak during the prayer.”

machine translationA group of the imams narrated it from ʿĀṣim b. Abī al-Najūd, and the jurists have circulated it. However, the two authors of the Ṣaḥīḥ avoid narrations of ʿĀṣim because of his poor memory (sūʾ ḥifẓ), so they recorded it by another route with some of its meaning.
