حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَّى ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فِي حُجْرَتِهِ، فَسَمِعَ النَّاسُ صَوْتَهُ، فَلَمَّا كَانَتِ اللَّيْلَةُ الثَّانِيَةُ جَاءَ نَاسٌ فَصَلَّوْا بِصَلَاتِهِ، فَخَفَّفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحُوا قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، صَلَّيْنَا مَعَكَ اللَّيْلَةَ، وَنَحْنُ نُحِبُّ أَنْ تَمُدَّ فِي قِرَاءَتِكَ، فَقَالَ: قَدْ عَلِمْتُ بِمَكَانِكُمْ وَعَمْدًا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ

Translation

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ prayed one night in his room, and the people heard his voice. On the second night, people came and prayed with his prayer, so the Messenger of God ﷺ made it light and then left. When morning came, they said: “O Messenger of God, we prayed with you last night, and we would like you to lengthen your recitation.” He said: “I knew where you were, and I did that deliberately.”
