✧ One day the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ went out and said: "O Messenger of God, we are ruined, by the Lord of the Kaaba!" He said: "And what is that?" They said: "Hypocrisy, hypocrisy." He said: "Do you not testify that there is no god but God alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger?" They said: "Yes." He said: "That is not hypocrisy." Then they returned a second time and said: "O Messenger of God, we are ruined, by the Lord of the Kaaba!" He said: "And what is that?" They said: "Hypocrisy, hypocrisy." He said: "Do you not testify that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger?" They said: "Yes." He said: "That is not hypocrisy." Then they returned a third time and said: "O Messenger of God, we are ruined, by the Lord of the Kaaba!" He said: "And what is that?" They said: "Hypocrisy." He said: "Do you not testify that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger?" They said: "Yes." He said: "That is not hypocrisy." They said: "When we are with you, we are in a certain state, but when we leave you, the world and our families preoccupy us." He said: "If, when you left me, you remained in the state you are in with me, the angels would shake your hands in the streets of Madinah."
