✧ While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was addressing the people on Friday, a man from Banu Layth b. Bakr b. Abd Manat b. Kinanah came stepping over the people until he approached him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, impose the prescribed punishment on me.' The Prophet ﷺ said to him: 'Sit down.' He sat down. Then he stood up a second time, and he said: 'Sit down.' Then he stood up the third time and said the same. He said: 'What is your prescribed punishment?' He said: 'I had unlawful intercourse with a woman.' The Prophet ﷺ said to some men of his companions, among them Ali b. Abi Talib, al-Abbas, Zayd b. Harithah, and Uthman b. Affan: 'Take him and flog him one hundred lashes.' The Laythi man had not been married. It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, will you not flog the woman with whom he committed adultery?' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Bring him to me after he has been flogged.' When he was brought, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Who is your partner?' He said: 'So-and-so, a woman from Banu Bakr.' He summoned her and asked her about that. She said: 'He has lied, by Allah, I do not know him, and I am innocent of what he said, Allah is witness to what I say.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Who testified that you committed adultery with her? For she denies it. If you have witnesses, I will flog her with the prescribed punishment, otherwise we will flog you with the punishment for slander.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have no witnesses.' So he ordered and he was flogged with the punishment for slander, eighty lashes.
