Chain of narrators
- Ibn ʿAbbās
- Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb
✧ They were merchants in the Levant, and that was during the period of truce between the Messenger of God ﷺ and the disbelievers of Quraysh. Abu Sufyan said: "The messenger of Caesar came to us and took me and my companions until we arrived at Ilya'. We were admitted to him, and there he was sitting in his royal court, wearing the crown, with the nobles of Byzantium around him. He said to his interpreter: 'Ask them which of them is closest in kinship to this man who claims to be a prophet.' Abu Sufyan said: 'I am the closest of them.' He said: 'How are you related to him?' I replied: 'He is my cousin, and in the caravan that day there was no man from Banu Abd Manaf other than me.'" He said: "Caesar said: 'Bring him near me,' and he ordered my companions to be placed behind me. Then he said to his interpreter: 'I will ask this man about this man who claims to be a prophet. If he lies, then declare him a liar.'" Abu Sufyan said: "Had it not been for the shame that my companions would report me as lying, I would have lied about him when he asked. But I was too ashamed for them to report me as lying, so I told the truth about him. Then he said to his interpreter: 'Say: How is this man's lineage among you?' I said: 'He is of noble lineage among us.' He said: 'Has anyone among you ever said such a thing before him?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'Did you ever accuse him of lying before he said what he said?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'Was any of his forefathers a king?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'Do the nobles or the weak among the people follow him?' I said: 'Rather the weak.' He said: 'Are they increasing or decreasing?' I said: 'They are increasing.' He said: 'Does he ever betray?' I said: 'No, but we are currently in a truce with him, and we fear that he might.'" Abu Sufyan said: "No opportunity arose for me to say anything by which I could belittle him, because I was afraid that something else would be reported from me." He said: "So he said: 'Have you fought him?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'How was your war and his war?' I said: 'It was alternating: sometimes he gained the upper hand over us, and sometimes we over him.' He said: 'What does he command you?' I said: 'He commands us to worship God alone without associating anything with Him, and he forbids us from what our forefathers worshipped. He commands us to pray, give charity, fulfill covenants, and render trusts.'" He said: "Then he said to his interpreter after I had said that: 'I asked you about his lineage among you, and you claimed that he is of noble lineage among you. Thus are messengers sent: among the noblest lineages of their people. I asked you whether anyone among you had said this before him, and you claimed no. I said to myself: If anyone among them had said this before him, I would have said he is a man following a statement said before him. I asked you whether you used to accuse him of lying before he said what he said, and you claimed no. I said to myself: He would not refrain from lying about people and then lie about God. I asked you whether any of his forefathers was a king, and you claimed no. I said to myself: If any of his forefathers had been a king, I would have said he is a man seeking his father's kingdom. I asked you whether the nobles or the weak follow him, and you claimed that the weak follow him, and they are the followers of the messengers. I asked you'"
