حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ خَرَجْتُ مَعَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ حَتَّى دَخَلْتُ عَلَى صُهَيْبٍ حَائِطًا بِالْعَالِيَةِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ صُهَيْبٌ قَالَ يَا نَاسُ يَا نَاسُ فَقَالَ

عُمَرُ ؓ مَا لَهُ لَا أَبَا لَهُ يَدْعُو عَلَيَّ النَّاسَ قَالَ وَإِنَّمَا يَدْعُو غُلَامًا لَهُ يُقَالُ لَهُ يَحْنَسُ قَالَ يَا صُهَيْبُ مَا فِيكَ شَيْءٌ أَعِيبُهُ إِلَّا ثَلَاثَ خِصَالٍ لَوْلَاهُنَّ مَا قَدَّمْتُ عَلَيْكَ أَحَدًا قَالَ مَا هُنَّ فَإِنَّكَ طَعَّانٌ قَالَ فَهَلْ هُوَ مُخْبِرِي عَنْهُنَّ؟ قَالَ مَا أَنْتَ سَائِلِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا أَخْبَرْتُكَ بِهِ قَالَ وَمَا أَنْتَ بِمُخْبِرِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا صَدَّقْتُكَ قَالَ أَرَاكَ تُبَذِّرُ مَالَكَ وتَكْتَنِي بِاسْمِ نَبِيٍّ بِأَبِي يَحْيَى وَتُنْسَبُ عَرَبِيًّا وَلِسَانُكَ أَعْجَمِيٌّ قَالَ أَمَّا تَبْذِيرِي مَالِي فَمَا أُنْفِقُهُ إِلَّا فِي حَقِّهِ وَأَمَّا اكْتِنَائِي «فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَنَّانِي بِأَبِي يَحْيَى» أَوَ أَتْرُكُهَا لِقَوْلِكَ وَأَمَّا انْتِسَابِي فِي الْعَرَبِ فَإِنَّ الرُّومَ سَبَتْنِي وَأَنَا صَغِيرٌ فَإِنِّي لَا أَذْكُرُ أَهْلَ بَيْتِي وَلَوْ أَنِّي انْفَلَقْتُ عَنْ رَوْثَةٍ انْتَسَبْتُ إِلَيْهَا

✧ Umar ؓ said, "What is wrong with him—may he have no father—he calls the people against me?" He said, "He is only calling a servant of his named Yahnas." He said, "O Suhayb, there is nothing in you that I find fault with except three traits; were it not for them, I would not place anyone ahead of you." He said, "What are they?" He replied, "You are a fault-finder." He said, "Will he tell me about them?" He said, "You will not ask me about anything but I will inform you of it." He said, "And you will not inform me of anything but I will believe you." He said, "I see you squander your wealth, you take a kunya with the name of a prophet—Abu Yahya—and you claim Arab lineage while your tongue is non-Arab." He said, "As for my squandering my wealth, I spend it only in its proper right. As for my kunya, the Messenger of God ﷺ gave me the kunya Abu Yahya; shall I abandon it because of your words? And as for my claiming Arab lineage, the Byzantines captured me when I was young, and I do not remember my family. Even if I had emerged from a piece of dung, I would trace my lineage to it."
