✧ Pharaoh and his courtiers discussed what God had promised Abraham, that He would make among his descendants prophets and kings. Some of them said: 'The Children of Israel are surely awaiting that, without any doubt. They had thought it would be Joseph son of Jacob, but when he died, they said: It is not so; God, Mighty and Majestic, promised Abraham.' Pharaoh said: 'What do you think about it?' They deliberated and agreed to send men with knives to go around among the Children of Israel and slaughter every newborn male they found. They did so. When they saw that the elders of the Children of Israel were dying of natural causes while the young were being slaughtered, they said: 'It is likely that you will wipe out the Children of Israel, and then you will have to undertake the labor they used to spare you. So kill every newborn male in one year, that their numbers may dwindle, and spare them in another year, so that the young may grow up in place of the elders who die. For they will not become numerous through those you let live to the point that you fear they will outnumber you, nor will they perish through those you kill to the point that you will need such killing.' So they agreed on that. The mother of Moses conceived Aaron in the year when boys were not slaughtered, and she gave birth to him openly and safely. The following year she conceived Moses, and anxiety and grief entered her heart—that is from the trials, O Ibn Jubayr—on account of what was intended for him. God, Blessed and Exalted, revealed to her: 'Fear not, nor grieve; indeed, We will return him to you and make him one of the messengers.' He commanded her, when she gave birth, to put him in a chest and cast it into the river. When she gave birth, she did that. When her son was hidden from her, Satan came to her, and she said to herself: 'What have I done with my son? Had he been slaughtered in my presence and I had buried him and shrouded him, that would have been dearer to me than casting him with my own hand into the waves of the sea and its fish.' The water carried him until it brought him to a landing place where the maidservants of Pharaoh's wife drew water. When they saw him, they took him, and they were about to open the chest, but one of them said: 'There is wealth in this, and if we open it, Pharaoh's wife will not believe us about what we found in it.' So they carried it as it was, without disturbing anything, until they delivered it to her. When she opened it, she saw a boy in it, and love for him was cast upon her such as she had never felt for any human being. The heart of Moses' mother became empty of remembrance of everything except remembrance of Moses. When the slaughterers heard of his affair, they came with their knives to Pharaoh's wife to slaughter him—that is from the trials, O Ibn Jubayr. She said to them: 'Leave him, for this one child will not increase the Children of Israel. Let me go to Pharaoh and ask him to give him to me. If he grants him to me, you will have done well and acted nobly, but if he orders him to be slaughtered, I will not blame you.' She took him to Pharaoh and said: 'He will be a comfort to me and to you.' Pharaoh said: 'He may be for you, but for me I have no need of that.'" The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "By the One in whose hand is my oath, had Pharaoh acknowledged that he would be a comfort to him as his wife acknowledged, God would have guided him by him just as He guided his wife. But He deprived him of that. So she sent to every woman around her who had milk to choose a wet nurse for him. But every time one of them took him to nurse him, he would not accept her breast, until Pharaoh's wife feared he would refuse milk and die, and that grieved her. He was taken out to the market and gathering place of the people in hope of finding a wet nurse he would accept, but he refused. The mother of Moses became distraught, and she said to his sister: 'Follow him; trace his tracks and seek him. Do you hear any mention of him? Is my son alive or have the beasts eaten him?'—and she forgot what God had promised her concerning him. His sister spotted him from afar while they were unaware. Al-junub means when a person's eyesight rises to something far off while it is beside him and he is unaware of it. She said out of joy when the wet nurses failed: 'Shall I direct you to a household who will nurse him for you and be sincere to him?' They took her and said: 'What makes you know of their sincerity to him? Do you know him?'—until they doubted that; and that is from the trials, O Ibn Jubayr. She said: 'Their sincerity toward him and their compassion for him stem from desire for a connection to the king and hope of benefit from him.' They sent her, and she went to her mother and told her the news. His mother came, and when she placed him in her lap, he sprang to her breast and suckled until his sides were full. The bearer of good news went to Pharaoh's wife to give her the glad tidings that they had found a wet nurse for her son. She sent for her, and she was brought with him. When she saw what he did with her, she said to her: 'Stay with me and nurse this son of mine, for I have never loved anything as I love him.' Moses' mother said: 'I cannot leave my house and my son, for we would be ruined. If you are content to give him to me, I will take him to my house and he will be with me, and I will spare no effort for his good. Otherwise, I will not leave my house and my son.' The mother of Moses remembered what God, Mighty and Majestic, had promised her, and she was reluctant with Pharaoh's wife, certain that God would fulfill His promise. She returned to her house with her son. The people of the village became united, refusing forced labor and injustice as long as he was among them. When he had grown a little, Pharaoh's wife said to Moses' mother: 'I want you to show me my son.' She promised her a day to show him to her. Pharaoh's wife said to her treasurers, stewards, and nurses: 'Let none of you remain unless he meets my son today with a gift and honor, so that I may see that in him. I am sending a trustworthy person to count everything each of you does.' The gifts, honors, and presents kept coming to him from the time he left his mother's house until he was brought before Pharaoh's wife. When he entered upon her, she honored him, showed him respect, rejoiced in him, and was delighted with him, and she honored his mother for her good influence upon him. Then she said: 'I will bring him to Pharaoh, and he will surely honor and respect him.' When she brought him to him and placed him in his lap, Moses grabbed Pharaoh's beard and pulled it down to the ground. The evildoers, enemies of God, said to Pharaoh: 'Do you not see what God promised Abraham His prophet: that he will rear you, and rise above you, and throw you down?' So Pharaoh sent for the slaughterers to slaughter him—and that is from the trials, O Ibn Jubayr, after every affliction he was tried with. 'And I will expose you to trials.' Pharaoh's wife came running to Pharaoh and said: 'What has changed your mind about this boy whom you gave me?' He said: 'Do you not see he claims he will throw me down and rise above me?' She said: 'Let us settle the matter between us in a way that will reveal the truth: bring two live coals and two pearls, and place them before him. If he seizes the pearls and avoids the coals, you will know he has understanding; but if he takes the coals and not the pearls, you will know that no one with understanding would prefer coals over pearls.' So he brought them near, and Moses took the coals, and they snatched them from his hand for fear they would burn him. The woman said: 'Do you see?' So God turned him away from him after he had intended to kill him, for God, Mighty and Majestic, was to accomplish His purpose through him. When Moses reached full strength and became a man, no one of Pharaoh's clan could wrong any Israelite or impose forced labor on him as long as Moses was with them, until they completely resisted. While Moses was in one part of the city, he came upon two men fighting: one was an Egyptian and the other an Israelite. The Israelite called for his help against the Egyptian. Moses became very angry because he had seized the Israelite, while knowing Moses' standing with the Children of Israel and his protection of them. People did not know that this was because of his having nursed them, except Moses' mother—unless God had informed Moses of what He had not informed others. Moses struck the Egyptian and killed him, and no one saw them except God and the Israelite. When Moses killed the man, he said: 'This is from the work of Satan; indeed, he is a clear misleading enemy.' Then he said: 'My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me,' and He forgave him; indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful. In the morning he was in the city, fearful and vigilant, awaiting news. Pharaoh was informed, and it was said to him: 'The Children of Israel have killed a man of Pharaoh's clan; take our due for us and do not be lenient with them.' He said: 'Find me his killer and someone who will testify against him. For a king, even if his favor is with a people, cannot rightly exact retribution without clear proof. Seek out knowledge of that for me, and I will obtain your right for you.' While they were searching and found no proof, the next day Moses saw that same Israelite fighting another man of Pharaoh's clan. The Israelite called for his help against the Egyptian. Moses, regretting what he had done before, disliked what he saw because of the Israelite's anger, while he intended to seize the Egyptian. He said to the Israelite about what he had done yesterday and today: 'You are clearly a misguided man.' The Israelite looked at Moses when he said what he said and saw him angry as he had been the day before, and he feared that Moses meant him and not the Egyptian. Moses had not meant him but the Egyptian. But the Israelite was afraid, and he restrained the Egyptian and said: 'O Moses, do you intend to kill me as you killed a soul yesterday?'—he said that only out of fear that Moses intended him, to kill him. They quarreled and fought, and the Egyptian went to his people and told them what he heard the Israelite say: 'Do you intend to kill me as you killed a soul yesterday?' Pharaoh sent the slaughterers to kill Moses. The messengers of Pharaoh took the main road, walking openly, seeking Moses, not fearing that he would escape. Then a man from Moses' own people came from the farthest part of the city and took a shortcut so as to reach Moses before them and tell him the news—and that is from the trials, O Ibn Jubayr. Moses left, heading toward Midian, having faced no affliction before that, and he had no knowledge of the way except his good opinion of his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, for he said: 'Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the right way.' When he arrived at the watering place of Midian, he found there a crowd of people watering their flocks, and he found apart from them two women keeping back their flocks. He said to them: 'What is your situation, that you stand apart and do not water with the people?' They said: 'We have no strength to compete with the men, and we wait for the surplus from their troughs.' So he watered for them, and he drew abundant water with the bucket until he was the first of the shepherds to finish. They returned with their flocks to their father, and Moses withdrew and sought shade under a tree and said: 'My Lord, indeed I am in need of whatever good You send down to me.' Their father found it strange that they returned so quickly with their flocks full and well-fed, and he said: 'You have had some business today.' They told him what Moses had done. He told one of them to call him. She came to Moses and called him. When he spoke to him, he said: 'Fear not; you have escaped from the wrongdoing people. Pharaoh and his people have no authority over us, and we are not in his kingdom.' One of the two women said: 'O my father, hire him; indeed, the best you can hire is the strong and trustworthy.' Jealousy prompted him to say: 'What do you know of his strength and trustworthiness?' She said: 'As for his strength, I saw what he did with the bucket when he watered for us; I have never seen a man stronger at drawing water. As for his trustworthiness, when I came to him and he looked at me and noticed me, when he realized I was a woman, he lowered his head and did not raise it or look at me until I delivered your message. Then he said: Walk behind me and describe the way to me. He would not have done this unless he were trustworthy.' Her father was relieved and believed her, and he thought of him as she had described. He said to him: 'Would you like me to marry you to one of these two daughters of mine on condition that you serve me for eight years? If you complete ten, that will be from you, and I do not wish to make it difficult for you. You will find me, God willing, among the righteous.' So it was done. Eight years were obligatory upon the Prophet of God Moses ﷺ, and two years were a promise from him. God fulfilled his promise for him, and he completed them as ten. Sa'id said: A man from the scholars of the Christians met me and said: 'Do you know which of the two terms Moses fulfilled?' I said: 'No,' and at that time I did not know. I met Ibn Abbas and mentioned that to him, and he said: 'Do you not know that eight years were obligatory upon Moses, and the Prophet of God would not have diminished anything from them, and he knew that God would fulfill the promise he had made? Indeed, he completed ten years.' I met the Christian and told him that, and he said: 'The one you asked and who told you is more knowledgeable than you about that?' I said: 'Yes, and more worthy.' When Moses traveled with his family, there was the matter of the fire, the staff, and his hand, as God has related to you in the Qur'an. He complained to his Lord, Blessed and Exalted, about his fear of Pharaoh's clan regarding killing and the knot in his tongue, for he had a knot in his tongue that prevented him from much speech. He asked his Lord to aid him with his brother Aaron, to be a support for him and speak on his behalf for much that his tongue could not articulate. God granted his request and untied a knot from his tongue. God revealed to Aaron and commanded him to meet Moses. Moses set out with his staff until he met Aaron, and they went together to Pharaoh. They stood at his gate for a while without being granted permission, then they were admitted after a long delay. They said: 'We are messengers of your Lord.' He said: 'Who is your Lord, O Moses?' Moses told him what God has related to you in the Qur'an. He said: 'What do you want?' And Moses reminded him of the slain man and excused himself as you have heard, and said: 'I want you to believe in God and send with me the Children of Israel.' He refused that and said: 'Bring a sign if you are truthful.' He threw down his staff, and it became a great serpent with gaping mouth, rushing toward Pharaoh. When Pharaoh saw it heading for him, he feared it and leaped from his throne and sought Moses' help to keep it from him, and he did. Then he drew out his hand from his bosom and it was white without any blemish, meaning without leprosy. Then he returned it and it reverted to its original color. He consulted the assembly around him about what he had seen. They said to him: 'These two are surely sorcerers who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and take away your exemplary way'—meaning their kingdom and the life they were living. They refused to give him anything he asked, and they said to him: 'Gather for us the sorcerers, for they are many in your land, so that their magic may overcome the magic of these two.' He sent throughout the city and gathered every accomplished sorcerer. When they came to Pharaoh, they said: 'What does this sorcerer work with?' They said: 'He works with serpents.' They said: 'By God, there is no one on earth who works magic with serpents and staffs as we do. What is our reward if we prevail?' He said to them: 'You are my kinsmen and my close associates, and I will give you whatever you desire.' They agreed on the Day of Adornment, and that the people should be assembled at forenoon. Sa'id said:"
