The Prophet ﷺ said: Prayer is to be offered in two rak'ahs; and you should recite the tashahhud at the end of two rak'ahs, and express your distress and humility and raise your hands and say praying: O Allah, O Allah. He who does not do so does not offer a perfect prayer. Abu Dawud was asked about offering prayer at night in two rak'ahs. He said: They may be two if you like and four if you like.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationWhat al-Layth says is more authentic, because ʿAmr b. al-Ḥārith and Ibn Lahīʿah corroborated al-Layth. ʿAmr and al-Layth used to write, whereas Shuʿbah was a man of memory. I said to my father: Is this chain sound (ṣaḥīḥ) in your view? He said: Good (ḥasan).

machine translationThis is the hadith that al-Bukhārī meant when he said that it is not authentic (ṣaḥīḥ). Ibn Ḥammād missed what al-Bukhārī said, so he said "from Rabīʿah b. al-Ḥārith," whereas it is in fact from ʿAbdullāh b. al-Ḥārith.

  • Khaṭṭābī

  • al-Bukhari

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAnd the correct statement is that of al-Layth b. Saʿd.

  • Ibn Khuzaymah

  • al-Bukhari

machine translationIt is not authentic (lā yaṣiḥḥ).

  • al-Bukhari

machine translationThe hadith of al-Layth is more authentic than the hadith of Shuʿbah.

  • Sulaymān b. Aḥmad al-Ṭabarānī

machine translationAl-Layth b. Saʿd preserved the chain of this hadith accurately, and Shuʿbah erred in it.

  • al-Bukhari

machine translationAnd the hadith of al-Layth is more authentic than the hadith of Shuʿbah.

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationThe hadith of al-Layth is more authentic, because Anas b. Abī Anas is not known, and ʿAbdullāh b. al-Ḥārith has no meaning here; it is only Rabīʿah b. al-Ḥārith.
