The Prophet ﷺ went out at an hour when he did not usually go out and when no one would meet him. Abu Bakr came to him, and he said: "What has brought you, Abu Bakr?" He said, "I came out to meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, to look at his face, and to greet him with salam." It was not long before Umar came, and he said: "What has brought you, Umar?" He said, "Hunger, Messenger of Allah." He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I too have experienced some of that." They then set out to the house of Abu al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihan al-Ansari. He was a man with many date-palms and sheep, but he had no servants. They did not find him, so they said to his wife, "Where is your companion?" She said, "He has gone to fetch sweet water for us." It was not long before Abu al-Haytham came with a waterskin that he was hauling. He set it down, then came and embraced the Prophet ﷺ, offering his father and mother as ransom for him. Then he took them to his garden, spread out a mat for them, went to a date-palm, brought a cluster, and set it down. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Why did you not select ripe dates for us?" He said, "Messenger of Allah, I wanted you to choose"—or he said, "to select"—"from its ripe and its unripe dates." So they ate and drank from that water, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This, by the One in Whose hand is my soul, is among the bliss about which you will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection: cool shade, good ripe dates, and cool water." Abu al-Haytham went off to prepare food for them, and the Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not slaughter one that gives milk." He said: So he slaughtered for them a young she-goat or a young male goat, brought it to them, and they ate. Then the Prophet ﷺ said: "Do you have a servant?" He said, "No." He said: "When captives come to us, come to us." Later the Prophet ﷺ was brought two persons, with no third accompanying them. Abu al-Haytham came to him, and the Prophet ﷺ said: "Choose one of them." He said, "Prophet of Allah, choose for me." The Prophet ﷺ said: "The one who is consulted is entrusted. Take this one, for I have seen him praying, and treat him well." Abu al-Haytham went to his wife and informed her of the statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. His wife said, "You will not fulfill what the Prophet ﷺ said about him unless you free him." He said, "He is free." Then the Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah has not sent any prophet or any caliph except that he has two inner circles: an inner circle that commands him to what is right and forbids him from what is wrong, and an inner circle that spares no effort in corrupting him. Whoever is protected from the evil inner circle has indeed been protected."

machine translationʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Shaybān b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī and ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAmr narrated it from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah. It was likewise narrated, in abridged form, from Hudbah b. al-Minhāl from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr. There is disagreement about Abū ʿAwānah: Aḥmad b. Isḥāq al-Ḥaḍramī narrated it from Abū ʿAwānah, from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from Abū Salamah, from ʿAbdullāh b. al-Zubayr. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥajjāj contradicted him and narrated it from Abū ʿAwānah, from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from Abū Salamah, as a mursal. There is also disagreement about Sharīk: Jubārah narrated it from Sharīk, from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah. Minjāb contradicted him and narrated it from Sharīk, from ʿAbd al-Malik, from Abū Salamah, as a mursal. Muḥammad b. al-Ṭufayl said, from Sharīk, from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from Abū Salamah, from Umm Salamah. Ibn Makhlad narrated to us, Ḥamdān b. ʿUmar narrated to us, Yaḥyā b. Abī Bukayr narrated to us, Shaybān narrated to us, from Yaḥyā, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ: "The one consulted is trusted." Ḥamdān made an error in it; this belongs only to the hadith of Shaybān from ʿAbd al-Malik, and his saying "from Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr" is an error. ʿAbd al-Ḥakīm b. Manṣūr said, from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihān. It seems that the inconsistency (iḍṭirāb) comes from ʿAbd al-Malik, and the closest to correct is the report of Shaybān and Abū Ḥamzah.
