machine translationAbū ʿĪsā said: This ḥadīth is strange (gharīb). Ibn ʿAbbās narrated something similar to it from the Prophet ﷺ. He said: On this topic there are narrations from ʿAlī, Ibn ʿUmar, ʿĀʾishah and Ibn Masʿūd. Abū ʿĪsā said: The ḥadīth of Umm Farwah is not narrated except through the ḥadīth of ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar al-ʿUmarī, and he is not strong according to the people of ḥadīth, and they differed regarding him in this ḥadīth. He is truthful (ṣadūq), and Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd spoke about him on account of his memory.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

machine translationThe correct view is what Ibn Ṣāʿid and Ibn Asbāṭ explained: that this ḥadīth with this chain is false (bāṭil), whether it is said in it ʿAbdullāh or ʿUbaydullāh. And this Yaʿqūb, most of what he narrates is of this kind; it is not preserved (maḥfūẓ), and his case among the weak narrators is clear.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 175
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar al-ʿUmarī is not strong according to the people of ḥadīth, and they differed regarding this ḥadīth.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 175
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationAs for Yaʿqūb, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: He was one of the great liars. Ibn Maʿīn called him a liar, and al-Nasāʾī said: He is abandoned (matrūk). Ibn Ḥibbān said: He used to fabricate ḥadīth, and no one other than him narrated this ḥadīth. Al-Ḥākim said: The blame for it lies on him. Al-Bayhaqī said: Yaʿqūb was called a liar by all the memorizers (ḥuffāẓ), and they attributed fabrication to him.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 175

machine translationIbn ʿAdī said: Ibn Ḥammād used to say in this ḥadīth ʿUbaydullāh, meaning in the diminutive form. He said: It is false (bāṭil), whether it is said in it ʿAbdullāh or ʿUbaydullāh. Ibn al-Qaṭṭān criticized ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq for declaring this ḥadīth weak because of ʿAbdullāh al-ʿUmarī while omitting to give Yaʿqūb as its defect.

  • Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥākim

machine translationThe blame in this ḥadīth lies on Yaʿqūb b. al-Walīd.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 175
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThis ḥadīth is known through Yaʿqūb b. al-Walīd al-Madanī, and Yaʿqūb is a narrator of rejected ḥadīth (munkar al-ḥadīth). Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn declared him weak, and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and the rest of the memorizers called him a liar and attributed fabrication to him. We seek refuge in God from abandonment.

machine translationI do not know of anything established regarding the times of prayer, that its beginning is such, its middle is such, and its end is such, meaning forgiveness and approval. A man said to him: Is it not narrated that the beginning of the time is such, and its middle is such, approval and forgiveness? Abū ʿAbdillāh said to him: Who narrates this? This is not established.
