✧ I came to Madinah in the season of dried curd and ghee, when the Bedouins were bringing al-burqān and selling them. I saw a man with raised gaze looking at the people, and I thought he was a stranger. I approached him, greeted him, and he returned my greeting and said to me: Are you from the people of this place? I said: Yes. I sat with him and said: From whom are you? He said: From Hilāl, and my name is Kahmas – or he said: From Banu Sulūl, and my name is Kahmas. Then he said to me: Shall I not tell you a hadith I witnessed from ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb? I said: Certainly. He said: While we were sitting with him, a woman came and sat before him and said: O Commander of the Faithful, my husband's evil has increased and his good has decreased. ʿUmar ؓ said to her: Who is your husband? She said: Abu Salama. He said: That man is a man of companionship, and he is a truthful man. Then ʿUmar said to a man sitting near him: Is it not so? He said: O Commander of the Faithful, we know him only as you said. Then ʿUmar said to a man: Arise and summon him for me. The woman rose when he sent for her husband and sat behind ʿUmar. It was not long before they came together and sat in front of ʿUmar. ʿUmar said: What do you say about this woman sitting behind me? He said: Who is she, O Commander of the Faithful? He said: This is your wife. He said: And what does she say? He said: She claims that your good has decreased and your evil has increased. He said: What an evil thing she has said, O Commander of the Faithful. She is among the best of her women, the most clothed and most comfortable, but her stallion is stingy. ʿUmar said: What do you say? She said: You are right. ʿUmar rose to her with the whip and struck her with it. Then he said: O enemy of herself, you have eaten his wealth and exhausted his youth, and then you set about informing of what is not in him. She said: O Commander of the Faithful, do not be hasty. By God, I will never sit in this gathering again. Then he ordered three garments for her and said: Take this for what I did to you, and beware of complaining about this old man. It is as if I see her rising with the garments. Then he turned to her husband and said: Do not let what you saw me do to her make you mistreat her. Go away. The man said: I would never do that. Then ʿUmar said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: The best of my community is the generation in which I am, then the second, then the third. Then a people will arise whose oaths precede their testimony, testifying without being asked to testify. They will have clamor in their markets. He said: Kahmas said to me: Do you fear that these might be among those? Then Kahmas said to me: I came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of my Islam. Then I was absent from him for a year. Then I came to him and said: O Messenger of God, it is as if you do not recognize me? He said: Indeed. I said: O Messenger of God, I have not broken fast since I parted from you. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: Who commanded you to torment yourself? Fast one day a month. I said: Give me more. He said: Fast two days, until he said: Fast three days of the month.
