✧ No, by Allah, I will not ask anyone for anything after what Sahl b. al-Hanzaliyyah told me. He said: I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when 'Uyaynah b. Badr al-Fazari and al-Aqra' b. Habis al-Tamimi came to him and asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for something. He called Mu'awiyah, may Allah have mercy on him, and ordered him with something I do not know what it was. Mu'awiyah came carrying two sheets. He threw one of the sheets to 'Uyaynah—and he was the more forbearing of the two men—so he took it and tied it to his turban. He threw the other to al-Aqra' b. Habis, who said, 'What is in it?' He said, 'In it is what you commanded.' He said, 'What a bad envoy of a people I am if I come to them with a sheet I carry, not knowing what is in it, like the sheet of al-Mutalammis!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was facing a man, talking to him, and when he heard his words, he took the sheet and opened it, and it contained a hobbled camel. He said, 'Where is the owner of this camel?' They searched but did not find him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Fear Allah regarding these beasts: eat them fat and ride them sound.' Then he went on until he entered his house, and I was with him. He began saying, as if displeased, 'Whoever asks people despite having enough is only increasing the embers of Hell.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is the meaning of having enough?' He said, 'That you know that his family has what suffices them for their morning or evening meal.'
