✧ ʿItban b. Malik, one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and among those from the Ansar who witnessed Badr, narrated to him that he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have noticed a decline in my eyesight, and I lead my people in prayer. When the rains come, the valley between me and them floods, and I cannot reach their mosque to lead them in prayer. I would love, O Messenger of Allah, for you to come and pray in a place that I will take as a prayer place.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “I will do so, if Allah wills.” ʿItban said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr set out early the next day, when the day had risen. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked permission, and I gave him permission. He did not sit down until he entered the house. Then he said: “Where would you like me to pray in your house?” I pointed to a corner of the house. He stood, said the takbir, and we stood behind him. He prayed two rakʿahs, then said the salam. We detained him over a khazirah that we had prepared. Men from the household around us came, until a number of men gathered in the house. One of them said: “Where is Malik b. al-Dukhshun?” Some of them said: “He is a hypocrite; he does not love Allah and His Messenger.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not say that. Do you not see that he has said ‘There is no god but Allah,’ seeking thereby the Face of Allah?” They said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “His face and his counsel are toward the hypocrites.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has forbidden the Fire for whoever says ‘There is no god but Allah,’ seeking thereby the Face of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted.” Ibn Shihab said: Then I asked al-Husayn b. Muhammad al-Ansari, one of the Banu Salim, about the hadith of Mahmud b. al-Rabiʿ, and he confirmed it. Ahmad b. Salih said: “Or you say al-Dukhshum, and that is correct.”
