✧ God, mighty and majestic is He, revealed to His Prophet ﷺ in Makkah: “The host will be routed and they will turn their backs” (Q 54:45). 'Umar b. al-Khattab said: “O Messenger of God, which host?”—and that was before Badr. He said: When the day of Badr came and Quraysh was defeated, I looked at the Messenger of God ﷺ in their tracks, brandishing his sword, saying: “The host will be routed and they will turn their backs.” And it was for the day of Badr. Then God, mighty and majestic is He, revealed concerning them: “Until, when We seize their affluent ones with punishment…” (Q 23:64) and the rest of the verse. And God revealed: “Have you not seen those who exchanged the favor of God for disbelief…” (Q 14:28) and the rest of the verse. And the Messenger of God ﷺ threw at them, and the throw spread over them and filled their eyes and mouths, so that a man would be killed while he was blinking his eyes, having been struck by it. Then God revealed: “And you did not throw when you threw, but God threw” (Q 8:17). And God revealed concerning Iblis: “When the two hosts saw each other, he turned on his heels and said: ‘I am innocent of you; I see what you do not see; I fear God, and God is severe in punishment’” (Q 8:48). And 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah and some people with him from the polytheists said on the day of Badr: “These people have been deceived by their religion.” Then God revealed: “When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease said: ‘These people have been deceived by their religion’” (Q 8:49).
