✧ The Prophet ﷺ encamped at Khaybar. The ruler of Khaybar was a defiant, fierce man. He approached the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Muhammad, is it [permissible] for you to slaughter our donkeys, eat our dates, enter our houses, and strike our women?” The Prophet ﷺ became angry and said, “O ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, mount your horse and call out among the people: ‘Paradise is not lawful except for a believer, and gather for prayer.’” So they gathered, and the Prophet ﷺ prayed. Then he said, “God has not made it lawful for you to enter the houses of the People of the Book except with permission, nor to consume their wealth, nor to strike their women, when they give you what is due from them, except what they give willingly. Does a man think, having eaten his fill until he is satiated, lounging on his couch, that God has not forbidden anything except what is in this Qur’an? Verily, by God, I have forbidden and commanded and admonished with things that are like the Qur’an or more. Verily, it is not lawful for you [to eat] any predatory animal with fangs, nor domestic donkeys."
