✧ Umm Mistah entered upon me, then she went out to a hut for a need, and Umm Mistah trod upon a bone or a thorn, and she said: "May Mistah perish!" I said: "What a bad thing you have said! Do you insult a man from among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" She said: "I bear witness that you are one of the heedless believing women. Do you know what has been spread about you?" I said: "No, by Allah." She said: "When was your last contact with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" I said: "The Messenger of Allah does with his wives whatever he likes; he begins with whom he loves and postpones whom he loves among them." She said: "It has been spread about you such-and-such." I fell down in a swoon. My mother Umm Ruman heard of it, and when she heard that 'A'ishah had learned of the matter, she came to me and carried me, and I went to her house. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ learned that 'A'ishah had heard of the matter, so he came to her and entered upon her and sat with her and said: "O 'A'ishah, Allah has made repentance ample." I increased in evil upon what was with me. While we were like that, Abu Bakr came and entered upon me and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what are you waiting for with this one who betrayed you and disgraced me?" She said: "I increased in evil upon evil." She said: "He sent for 'Ali and said: 'O 'Ali, what do you think about 'A'ishah?' He said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'You must tell me what you think about 'A'ishah.' He said: 'Allah has made women ample, but send for Barirah, her servant, and ask her; perhaps she has observed something of her affair.' So he sent for Barirah, and she came, and he said to her: 'Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?' She said: 'Yes.' He said: 'If I ask you about something, do not conceal it from me.' She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, there is nothing you ask me about but I will inform you of it, and I will not conceal anything from you, if Allah wills.' He said: 'You have been with 'A'ishah; have you seen anything from her that you dislike?' She said: 'No, by the One who sent you with prophethood, I have not seen from her since I have been with her except a trait.' He said: 'And what is it?' She said: 'I kneaded dough for myself, and I said to 'A'ishah: Guard this dough until I fetch a firebrand to bake. She stood up to pray and became heedless of the dough, and a sheep came and ate it.' Then he sent for Usamah and said: 'O Usamah, what do you think about 'A'ishah?' He said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'You must tell me what you think about her.' He said: 'I think you should remain silent about her until Allah sends down something to you concerning her.' She said: 'It was only a short while before revelation came down. When it came down, we began to see joy in the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and her vindication came from Allah, Mighty is His mention. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Rejoice, O 'A'ishah! Then rejoice, O 'A'ishah! Allah has brought you your vindication." I said: "Not by your praise or the praise of your companion." She said: "At that she spoke, and when he came to her he used to say: 'How is that one of yours?"
