أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ وَأَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدٌ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ

عَادَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ رَجُلًا قَدْ صَارَ مِثْلَ الْفَرْخِ فَقَالَ لَهُ «هَلْ كُنْتَ تَدْعُو بِشَيْءٍ أَوْ تَسْأَلُهُ إِيَّاهُ؟» قَالَ كُنْتُ أَقُولُ اللهُمَّ مَا كُنْتَ مُعَاقِبِي بِهِ فِي الْآخِرَةِ فَعَجِّلْهُ لِي فِي الدُّنْيَا قَالَ سُبْحَانَ اللهِ لَا تَسْتَطِيعُهُ أَوْ لَا تُطِيقُهُ أَلَا قُلْتَ {رَبَّنَا آتِنَا} [البقرة 201] فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ فِي حَدِيثِ قُتَيْبَةَ قَالَ فَدَعَا اللهَ فَشَفَاهُ اللَّفْظُ لِابْنِ الْمُثَنَّى

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited a man who had become like a fledgling and said to him: "Did you used to supplicate for anything or ask Him for it?" He said: "I used to say: O Allah, whatever punishment You would inflict on me in the Hereafter, hasten it for me in this world." He said: "Glory be to Allah! You cannot bear it—or you are not able to endure it. Why did you not say: {Our Lord, give us in this world good and in the Hereafter good, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire} [al-Baqarah 201]?" In the hadith of Qutaybah, he said: "So he supplicated to Allah and He healed him." The wording is that of Ibn al-Muthanna.
