حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ السَّرْحِ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ مَوْلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ قَالَ
كُنْتُ أَقُودُ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَاقَتَهُ فِي السَّفَرِ فَقَالَ لِي يَا عُقْبَةُ أَلاَ أُعَلِّمُكَ خَيْرَ سُورَتَيْنِ قُرِئَتَا فَعَلَّمَنِي { قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ } وَ { قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ } قَالَ فَلَمْ يَرَنِي سُرِرْتُ بِهِمَا جِدًّا فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ لِصَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ صَلَّى بِهِمَا صَلاَةَ الصُّبْحِ لِلنَّاسِ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الصَّلاَةِ الْتَفَتَ إِلَىَّ فَقَالَ يَا عُقْبَةُ كَيْفَ رَأَيْتَ

I was driving the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during a journey. He said to me: Uqbah, should I not teach you two best surahs ever recited? He then taught me: "Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn," and "Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of men." He did not see me much pleased (by these two surahs). When he alighted for prayer, he led the people in the morning prayer and recited them in prayer. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he turned to me and said: O Uqbah, how did you see.

الحديثين جميعا كانا عند معاوية بن صالح وكان الثوري حافظ فكان حفظ هذا أسهل على الثوري من حديث العلاء فحفظ هذا ولم يحفظ ذاك ومما يدل أن هذا الحديث صحيح أن هذا الحديث يرويه الحمصيون عن عبد الرحمن بن جبير عن عقبة ومحال أن يغلط بين هذا الإسناد إلى إسناد آخر وإنما أكثر ما يغلط الناس إذا كان حديثا واحدا من اسم شيخ إلى شيخ آخر فأما مثل هؤلاء فلا أرى يخفى على الثوري
machine translationBoth hadiths were held by Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ, and al-Thawrī was a memorizer. It was easier for al-Thawrī to memorize this one than the hadith of al-ʿAlāʾ, so he memorized this one and did not memorize that one. Among what indicates that this hadith is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) is that the people of Homs narrate it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jubayr from ʿUqbah, and it is impossible that he confused this chain with another chain. People mostly err when it is a single hadith, moving from the name of one shaykh to another shaykh. As for the like of these, I do not think it would have escaped al-Thawrī.
