Translation

Chain of narrators
  1. ʿAbdullāh b. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal
  2. my father
  3. ʿAbd al-Raḥman
  4. Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ
  5. al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥārith
  6. al-Qāsim a freed slave of Muʿāwiyah
  7. ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir

✧ I was leading the Messenger of Allah ﷺ's riding camel on a journey, and he said: 'O Uqbah, shall I not teach you the best two surahs ever recited?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Say: "I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak" and "Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind."' When he dismounted, he prayed the morning prayer with them, then said: 'How do you see it, O Uqbah?' As for the hadith of Zayd b. al-Hubab, from Mu'awiyah b. Salih, it is similar to this chain of transmission. 'And this chain of transmission does not invalidate the first one, for this is a chain of transmission for another text, and Allah knows best.'

machine translationIn my view both of these narrations are sound (ṣaḥīḥ); both have an origin in Syria, from Jubayr b. Nufayr from ʿUqbah, and from al-Qāsim from ʿUqb[unclear].

machine translationBoth hadiths were held by Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ, and al-Thawrī was a memorizer. It was easier for al-Thawrī to memorize this one than the hadith of al-ʿAlāʾ, so he memorized this one and did not memorize that one. Among what indicates that this hadith is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) is that the people of Homs narrate it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jubayr from ʿUqbah, and it is impossible that he confused this chain with another chain. People mostly err when it is a single hadith, moving from the name of one shaykh to another shaykh. As for the like of these, I do not think it would have escaped al-Thawrī.

machine translationThis is a mistake, that is, the narration of Sufyān al-Thawrī from Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jubayr from ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir. Rather it is Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ from al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥārith from al-Qāsim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from Muʿāwiyah from the Prophet ﷺ.

machine translationThis is not from the hadith of Muʿāwiyah from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. Rather, Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ narrated this from al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥārith from al-Qāsim from ʿUqbah.
