Yahya related to me from Malik from Safwan ibn Sulaym from Said ibn Salama of the Bani Azraq from al-Mughira ibn Abi Burda of the tribe of Bani Abd ad-Dar that he had heard Abu Hurayra speak about a man who came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah! We travel by sea and we do not carry much fresh water with us so if we do wudu with it we go thirsty. Can we do wudu with seawater?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "lts water is pure, and its dead creatures are halal."

machine translationAnd the closest of them to what is correct is the statement of Mālik and whoever followed him, on the authority of Ṣafwān b. Sulaym.

    in موطأ مالك, p. 37
  • al-Bukhari

machine translationAbū ʿĪsā al-Tirmidhī asked Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Bukhārī about this hadith of Mālik, from Ṣafwān b. Sulaym, and he said: "In my view it is a sound (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith." Al-Tirmidhī said: I said to al-Bukhārī: "Hushaym says in it: al-Mughīrah b. Abī Burzah." He said: "He erred in it; it is only al-Mughīrah b. Abī Burdah." He said: "Hushaym sometimes erred in the chain of transmission (isnād), but he is more precise in the short narrations (muqaṭṭaʿāt)."

    in موطأ مالك, p. 37
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThe people of hadith would not use a chain like this one as evidence, but in my view it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ), because the scholars received it with acceptance and acted upon it, and none of the jurists disagrees with it in its general sense; the disagreement is only over some of its meanings.
