✧ Ali ؓ refrained from fighting the people of al-Nahr until they initiated [hostilities]. They departed and came upon Abdullah b. Khabbab while he was in a village of his, having withdrawn from the fitnah. They seized him. He said: They saw a date that had fallen from the top of a palm tree, and a man among them took it and put it in his mouth. They said: 'A date from the dates of the people of the covenant, you took it without paying its price.' He said: So he spat it out. He said: Then they came upon a pig, and one of them stabbed it with his sword and killed it. They said: 'A pig belonging to the people of the covenant, you killed it.' Abdullah b. Khabbab ؓ said to them: 'Shall I not inform you—or tell you—of someone who has a greater right over you than this date and this pig?' They said: 'Who?' He said: 'I.' (I think he said): 'I have not abandoned any prayer since I reached maturity, nor the fasting of Ramadan,' and he enumerated several things. So they brought him forward and killed him. That reached Ali ؓ, and he ordered his companions to march against them. He said: 'Let them give us retribution for Abdullah b. Khabbab.' They said: 'How can we give you retribution for him when all of us killed him?' He said: 'Allah is greater.' And he said to his companions: 'Attack them, for by Allah, not ten of you will be killed and not ten of them will flee.' And so it happened. Ali ؓ said: 'Search for a man whose description is such and such.' They searched but did not find him. Then they searched again and found him. Ali ؓ said: 'Who knows this man?' No one recognized him. Then a man said: 'I saw this one at al-Najaf.' He said: 'I intend to go to this city, and there is no one there with lineage or acquaintance.' Ali ؓ said: 'You have spoken the truth; he is a man from the jinn.'
