✧ There was among us a young man of great worship, asceticism, and exertion. He said: We named him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but he did not recognize him. We described him by his description, but he did not recognize him. While we were thus, he approached. We said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'It is this one.' He ﷺ said: 'Indeed, I see on his face a dark mark from Satan.' He came and greeted. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: 'Have you said within yourself that there is no one among the people better than you?' He said: 'O Allah, yes.' Then he turned away and entered the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Who will kill the man?' Abu Bakr ؓ said: 'I will.' He entered and found him standing in prayer. He said: 'Should I kill a man who is praying, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden us from striking those who pray?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Who will kill the man?' Umar ؓ said: 'I will, O Messenger of Allah.' He entered the mosque and found him prostrating. He said the same as Abu Bakr ؓ, and added: 'I will certainly return, for one better than me has already returned.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Enough, O Umar.' He mentioned it to him, and he ﷺ said: 'Who will kill the man?' Ali ؓ said: 'I will.' He ﷺ said: 'You will kill him if you find him.' He entered the mosque and found that he had already left. He ﷺ said: 'By Allah, if you had killed him, he would have been the first of them and the last of them, and no two of my Ummah would have differed.'
