✧ Abu Bakr ؓ wrote to Khalid ؓ — meaning on the day of al-Yamamah and the killing of the apostates — to march to al-Hirah then proceed to Syria. When he camped at al-Hirah, he wrote to the people of Persia, then said: 'I would love not to leave until I frighten them.' So he raided them until he reached Sura, killing and taking captives. Then he raided Ayn al-Tamr, killing and taking captives. Then he proceeded to Syria. Amir, meaning al-Sha'bi, said: Ibn Buqaylah — meaning Abd al-Masih al-Himyari — brought out to me the letter of Khalid ibn al-Walid ؓ to them: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Khalid ibn al-Walid to the marzbans of Persia: Peace be upon those who follow guidance. To proceed: I praise Allah, besides whom there is no deity, with the praise He deserves, who has cut off your sacred precincts, dispersed your unity, weakened your might, and stripped away your kingdom. When this letter of mine reaches you, accept from me the covenant of protection, pay the jizyah, and send hostages to me. Otherwise, by Him besides whom there is no deity, I will fight you with a people who love death as you love life. Peace be upon those who follow guidance.
