✧ On the day of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was scratched and his front tooth was broken. Ali ؓ came to him and bent over him, weeping. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “Bring me water.” So he brought him water in a bowl from the Mihras. When he brought it near him, he found it foul, so he began washing the blood from him and saying: “Allah's wrath is severe upon a people who wounded the face of His Prophet.” Then he said: “See what Sa'd b. al-Rabi' has done, for I saw twelve spears planted in him.” The messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him and said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to see what you have done.” He said ؓ: “Convey my greetings to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and tell him that I am at my last breath. And convey my greetings to your people and say to them: If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perishes while any of you has an eyelid that blinks, then you have no excuse before Allah Almighty.” Then he said: “Who will take this sword with its due right?” This hadith is narrated by al-Zubayr about himself. He said: I said: “O Messenger of Allah, I will.” But he turned away from me once. I said: “He only turned away from me because of some evil in me.” Then he said: “Who will take this sword with its due right?” I said: “I will.” But he turned away from me two or three times. Then Abu Dujana ؓ said: “I will take it and strike with it until it bends,” or words to that effect. So he gave him the sword. Al-Zubayr said: I followed him to see what he would do. He did not come upon any man of the polytheists except that he killed him. He came upon a man who had been held back from fighting and killed him. Then he came upon a woman who was reciting: “If you advance, we embrace and spread the cushions; or if you retreat, we part with an unloving parting.” He raised the sword over her, then withheld his hand from her. I said: “O Abu Dujana, you did such and such, until you came to the woman and raised the sword over her, then withheld your hand?” He said: “I deemed the sword of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ too noble for her.”
