✧ Arbad b. Qays b. Juzayy b. Khalid b. Ja’far b. Kilab and Amir b. al-Tufayl b. Malik came to Madinah to Allah’s Messenger ﷺ. They reached Allah’s Messenger ﷺ while he was sitting, and they sat before him. Amir b. al-Tufayl said, “O Muhammad, what will you grant me if I accept Islam?” Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “You will have what the Muslims have and you will bear what they bear.” Amir b. al-Tufayl said, “Will you grant me the authority after you if I accept Islam?” Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “That is not for you nor for your people, but you may have the reins of the horses.” He said, “I am now in charge of the reins of the horses of Najd. Give me the desert and leave the settled land to you.” Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “No.” When they turned away from Allah’s Messenger ﷺ, Amir said, “By Allah, I will fill it against you with horses and men.” Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “Allah will prevent you.” When Arbad and Amir left, Amir said, “O Arbad, I will distract Muhammad with talk while you strike him with the sword. If you kill Muhammad, the people will only accept blood money and dislike war, and we will give them the blood money.” Arbad said, “I will do it.” They returned to him, and Amir said, “O Muhammad, stand with me so I may speak to you.” Allah’s Messenger ﷺ stood with him, and they withdrew to the wall, and Allah’s Messenger ﷺ stood speaking with him while Arbad drew the sword. When he placed his hand on the hilt of the sword, it stuck to the hilt, and he could not draw the sword. Arbad delayed striking Amir, so Allah’s Messenger ﷺ turned and saw Arbad and what he was doing, and he departed from them. When Amir and Arbad left Allah’s Messenger ﷺ and reached the harrat Waqim, they dismounted. Sa’d b. Mu’adh and Usayd b. Hudayr came out to them and said, “Depart, O enemies of Allah! May Allah curse you both.” Amir said, “Who is this, O Sa’d?” He said, “This is Usayd b. Hudayr, the one of the battalions.” They went on until they reached al-Raqm, where Allah, Exalted is He, sent a thunderbolt upon Arbad and killed him. Amir went on until he was at al-Harr, and then Allah sent a gland infection upon him. Night overtook him in the house of a woman from Banu Salul. He began touching the gland in his throat and saying, “A gland like the gland of a camel in the house of a Saluli woman,” wishing to die in her house. Then he mounted his horse and urged it on until he died upon it on his way back. Allah, Exalted is He, revealed concerning them: “Allah knows what every female carries and what the wombs decrease” up to His saying, “You have no protector besides Him.” He said: “The guardian angels” from Allah’s command protect Muhammad. Then he mentioned Arbad and what preceded him regarding it. He said: “It is He who shows you the lightning, causing fear and hope,” up to His saying, “And He is severe in stratagem.”
