✧ Hatib b. Abi Balta'ah wrote a letter to the people of Makkah. God Almighty informed His Prophet ﷺ, so he ﷺ sent Ali and al-Zubayr ؓ in pursuit of the letter. They caught up with the woman on a camel and extracted it from her braids. They brought it to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He sent for Hatib and said: O Hatib, did you write this letter? He said: Yes. He ﷺ said: What prompted you to do that? He said: O Messenger of God, by God, I am sincere to God Almighty and His Messenger ﷺ, but I was a stranger among the people of Makkah, and my family was among them, and I feared for them; so I wrote a letter that will not harm God and His Messenger at all, and perhaps it may benefit my family. Umar ؓ said: I drew my sword and said: O Messenger of God, let me deal with Hatib, for he has disbelieved, and let me strike his neck. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: O Ibn al-Khattab, what do you know? Perhaps God looked upon the people of Badr and said: Act as you wish, for I have forgiven you.
