✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent me, along with al-Zubayr and Abu Marthad al-Sulami, and we were all horsemen. He said: Go until you reach the meadow of Khakh, for there is a woman there with a letter from Hatib b. Abi Balta'a to the polytheists. Bring her to me. We caught up with her while she was leaning on her camel where the Messenger of God ﷺ had told us. I said: Where is the letter that is with you? She said: I have no letter with me. So we made her camel kneel and searched her saddle. My two companions said: We do not see anything with her. I said: We know that the Messenger of God ﷺ did not lie to us. By the One by whom we swear, you will bring it out or I will cut you—meaning with the sword. When she saw seriousness, she reached for her waistband, and she was wearing a woolen garment, and she brought out the letter. We brought it to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said: O Hatib, what made you do what you did? He said: O Messenger of God, I am nothing but a believer in God and His Messenger, but I wanted to have among the people a favor by which God might protect my family and property. Every one of your companions has among his people there someone through whom God protects his family and property. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: He has spoken the truth, so say nothing to him but good. Umar said: O Messenger of God, he has betrayed God, His Messenger, and the believers. Let me strike his neck. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Is he not one of the people of Badr? What do you know, O Umar? Perhaps God has looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do whatever you wish, for Paradise is assured for you.
