✧ A man from the Muslims passed by while fasting for three days, walking, and he could not find anything to break his fast with, so he would wake up fasting. Finally, a man from the Ansar named Thabit b. Qays ؓ noticed him. He said to his family: Tonight I will bring a guest. When you put out your food, let one of you go to the lamp as if to fix it, and let him extinguish it. Then strike your hands toward the food as if you are eating, but do not eat until our guest is full. When evening came, he brought him, and they put out their food. His wife went to the lamp as if to fix it, and she extinguished it. Then they began striking their hands in the food as if eating, but they did not eat, until their guest was full. Their food that night was only a loaf of bread, which was their sustenance. When morning came, Thabit ؓ went to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said: O Thabit, God Almighty was amazed last night at you and your deed. He said: Then this verse was revealed about him: 'And they prefer others over themselves even though they are in need.'
