✧ When Uthman ؓ was killed, that terrified me greatly, and the drawing of the sword among us was a grave matter. I sat in my house, but I had a need, so I set out to the market. There I saw about forty men sitting in the shade of the palace, and a chain had been stretched across the door. I said: I will enter. I went to enter, but the doorman prevented me. The people said to him: Leave him, woe to you. I went in, and there were the nobles of the people, and a cushion. Then Ali ؓ came, a handsome man in his robe, with no shirt or turban. He greeted and sat down. He did not disapprove of anyone among the people except me. He said ؓ: Ask me about whatever you wish, but do not ask me except about what benefits and does not harm. A man said to him: What did you say, so that we would love to tell you and then ask you? He said: Ask me about whatever you wish. He said: By those that scatter with a scattering? He said ؓ: Will you not ask about something other than this? He said: I ask you about what I want. He said ؓ: The winds. He said: What about those that bear a load? He said ؓ: The clouds. He said: What about those that run with ease? He said ؓ: The ships. He said: What about those that distribute a command? He said ؓ: The angels.
