✧ “When this verse was revealed: ‘They ask you for a ruling. Say: God gives you a ruling concerning the kālah’ (Q 4:176), the Prophet ﷺ was in his home. He looked and saw Ḥudhayfah ؓ, so he ﷺ recited it to him and Ḥudhayfah ؓ learned it. Then Ḥudhayfah ؓ looked and saw ʿUmar ؓ, so he recited it to him and he learned it. When ʿUmar ؓ became caliph, he wanted to judge concerning the kālah, so he met Ḥudhayfah ؓ and asked him about it. He said: ‘By God, I would be a fool if I thought your rule would burden me with a shackle and you say “teach it to me” — it is exactly what I told you.’ ʿUmar said: ‘May God have mercy on you, that is not what I meant.’ Ḥudhayfah said: ‘It was revealed to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he taught it to me, and I taught it to you just as he taught it to me. By God, I will never add anything to that.’”
