✧ Condemnation of Arrogance

قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ، ثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ، ثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ قَالَ: زَعَمَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ حَنْظَلَةَ:

أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ سَلَامٍ، مَرَّ فِي السُّوقِ عَلَيْهِ حُزْمَةٌ مِنْ حَطَبٍ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: أَلَيْسَ قَدْ أَغْنَاكَ اللهُ تَعَالَى عَنْ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى، وَلَكِنْ أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَقْمَعَ الْكِبْرَ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ حَبَّةِ خَرْدَلٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ

✧ That Abd Allah b. Salam passed through the market carrying a bundle of firewood. It was said to him, “Has not Allah, the Exalted, made you wealthy enough to avoid this?” He said, “Yes, but I wanted to subdue arrogance. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘No one will enter Paradise who has in his heart an atom’s weight of arrogance.’”
