✧ Warning Against Showing Off and Supplication That Removes It

قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ: حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ هُوَ ابْنُ هَارُونَ، أَنَا الْفَرَجُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ جَبَلَةَ الْيَحْصَبِيِّ قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعَ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَكَانَ فِيمَا حَدَّثَنَا أَنْ قَالَ:

إِنَّ قَائِلًا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مَا النَّجَاةُ غَدًا ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « لَا تُخَادِعِ اللهَ تَعَالَى ». قَالَ: وَكَيْفَ يُخَادَعُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « أَنْ تَعْمَلَ بِمَا أَمَرَكَ اللهُ بِهِ تُرِيدُ بِهِ غَيْرَهُ، فَاتَّقُوا الرِّيَاءَ فَإِنَّهُ الشِّرْكُ بِاللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، فَإِنَّ الْمُرَائِيَ يُنَادَى بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَلَى رُؤُوسِ الْخَلَائِقِ بِأَرْبَعَةِ أَسْمَاءٍ: يَا فَاجِرُ يَا كَافِرُ، يَا خَاسِرُ، يَا غَادِرُ، ضَلَّ عَمَلُكَ وَبَطَلَ أَجْرُكَ، فَلَا خَلَاقَ لَكَ الْيَوْمَ عِنْدَ اللهِ تَعَالَى، فَالْتَمِسْ أَجْرَكَ مِمَّنْ كُنْتَ تَعْمَلُ لَهُ يَا مُخَادِعُ ». قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: آللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ، أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: وَاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ، لَأَنَا سَمِعْتُ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ شَيْئًا لَمْ أَتَعَمَّدْهُ. قَالَ يَزِيدُ: وَأَظُنُّهُ قَرَأَ آيَاتٍ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ: فَمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو لِقَاءَ رَبِّهِ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلا صَالِحًا الْآيَةَ وَ: إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ يُخَادِعُونَ اللهَ وَهُوَ خَادِعُهُمْ الْآيَةَ

  7. Kunnā Maʿ a man Min Aṣḥāb al-Nabī ﷺ Fakān Fīmā

✧ A speaker among the Muslims said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is salvation tomorrow?" He ﷺ said: "Do not deceive Allah, Exalted is He." He said: "And how is Allah, Mighty and Majestic, deceived?" He ﷺ said: "That you do what Allah has commanded you, seeking by it other than Him. So beware of showing off, for it is associating partners with Allah, Mighty and Majestic. The one who shows off will be called on the Day of Resurrection before all creation by four names: O sinner, O disbeliever, O loser, O treacherous one. Your deeds have gone astray and your reward is nullified. You have no share today with Allah, Exalted is He. Seek your reward from the one for whom you used to work, O deceiver." He (the narrator) said: I said to him: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, I heard this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, unless it is something I did not intend." Yazīd said: "I think he recited verses from the Qur'an: 'So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him work righteous deeds' and 'Indeed, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them.'"
