✧ Umar ؓ stood before the people as a preacher when they entered Syria at al-Jabiyah and said: 'Learn the Qur'an so you may be known by it, and act upon it so you may be among its people. It will never reach the station of one who has a right that he be obeyed in disobedience to God Almighty. Know that no statement of truth or momentous reminder brings near a term or pushes away provision. Know that between the servant and his provision there is a veil.' He said: 'His provision appears to him; but if he plunges ahead, the veil is torn, and he will not attain beyond his provision. Train the horses, compete in archery, wear sandals, use the tooth-stick, adopt the ways of Ma'add. Beware of the character of the non-Arabs, of living next to tyrants, of a cross being seen among you, of sitting at a table where wine is drunk, of entering the bathhouse without a waist-wrapper, and of letting your women enter the bathhouses—for that is not lawful. Beware of earning from the non-Arabs after you settle in their lands what keeps you in their land, for you will soon return to your own lands. Beware of yellow dye: do not put it on your necks. Hold to the wealth of the Arabs: livestock, with which you move wherever you move. Know that drinks are made from raisins, honey, and dates; whatever of them has aged is wine, which is not lawful. Know that God Almighty will not purify three persons, nor look at them, nor bring them near on the Day of Resurrection: a man who gives his leader a pledge intending worldly gain—if he obtains it, he fulfills it; if not, he does not; a man who goes out with merchandise after the afternoon prayer and swears that he was given such-and-such for it, so it is bought because of his word; and insulting a Muslim is wickedness and fighting him is unbelief. It is not lawful for you to abandon your brother for more than three days. Whoever goes to a sorcerer, a soothsayer, or a diviner and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was sent down upon Muhammad ﷺ.'
