✧ A man entered upon me at noon. I said: "What is your need, O servant of God?" He said: "I and a companion of mine were searching for some camels of ours. My companion went on searching, and I entered the shade to seek shelter and drink from the drink." She said: "I got up to some sour milk of ours—or perhaps she said: to some sour mixed drink—and gave him to drink from it. I examined him and said: 'O servant of God, who are you?' He said: 'Abu Bakr.' I said: 'Abu Bakr, the companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ whom I have heard of?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: "Then I remembered our raiding Khath'am in the pre-Islamic era, and our fighting one another, and what God Almighty brought of harmony and the ropes of the tents—like this, he interlocked his fingers. I said: 'O servant of God, how long will this affair of the people be?' He said: 'As long as the leaders remain upright.' She said: I said: 'And what are the leaders?' He said: 'Have you not seen the chief who is in the encampment, whom they follow and obey? They are those as long as they remain upright.'"
