✧ He came as a delegate to Umar ؓ, and his appearance and manner pleased Umar. Umar ؓ complained of coarse food he had eaten, so al-Rabi said: "O Commander of the Faithful, you are the most deserving of people of soft food, soft clothing, and a comfortable mount." He struck his head with a palm branch and said: "By God, you only intended by this to flatter me. I had thought there was good in you. Shall I not tell you a parable of me and these people? It is like a people who traveled and entrusted their provisions to one of them, saying: 'Spend it on us.' Is he allowed to take anything exclusively for himself over them?" Al-Rabi said: "No." He said: "This is the parable of me and them." Then Umar ؓ said: "I do not appoint my governors to insult your honors."
